Later, when I was on the exit road, I saw a County police car beside an Elsmere police car discussing something. As I approached the exit I saw two more cars in the grounds. As I exited the cemetery I saw two city police cars speed into the cemetery. Then as I was about a block away an ambulance with lights flashing was headed in that direction.

Message: ...by the sight of the group who were following the painted fish that was swimming for its life up Monroe Street. Both men watched as the two neighbors ended the carp's desperate attempt to find its way home. The iridescent purple outline on the fish was a symbol that Father Paul was deeply attuned to and the priest recognized the Latin word for "mercy" spelled on its side in smeared fingerpaint. On their way home from releasing the captive fish, the six year-old boy, Danny, overheard the congressman say: "This would make a good story but I don't know who would tell it or who would believe it." Seeing the boy's shining eyes, Father Paul gave a knowing glance toward his companion. "I can think of a number of happy endings," the priest replied. "'The fish slipped safely back into the stream' is one and Michael Faraday's famous remark, 'Nothing is too wonderful to be true' is another. But my choice," the priest concluded, "is the first line of a hymn we sing at Sacred Heart: 'God moves in a mysterious way'."

Message: Although the reason for the congressman's visit to Wilmington was to convey his father's greetings to his boyhood friend, there was also a personal reason for the young man's visit to talk with the priest. In the final year of his 2nd term, the 32 year-old legislator was questioning what he could accomplish in congress and whether he should run for reelection. Recognized as a war "hero," the young man was also questioning what it meant to be a hero; after all, as the captain of his patrol boat he believed he had only responded to the immediacy of the situation when his boat was rammed and sank in the Pacific. After listening to his friend's son, Father Paul offered a suggestion: "Why don't you write a book about 'courage', Jack? I think that will help to confirm what everyone else feels about 'your' actions," he added. "But you have to believe it for yourself; it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks. And about running for reelection....," he began, but was interrupted in mid-sentence.......

Message: The young congressman was amiable and the two men had a brief conversation on the drive into town. "John's been my pilot since I first ran for office," "Wild Bill's" passenger remarked. "His father taught him how to fly in an old biplane." "I'm familiar with your plane," Bill answered. "During the war it was called an 'AT-17'; mostly, we used it for training." "It makes a great commuter now," the legislator said, and then added: "I didn't fly much when I was in the service; I was on a boat." With only minutes to spare, Bill parked the Parkard before the downpour began. The rain was so hard that the chauffer could barely see past his windshield; he was grateful to be sitting in a dry, solid car to wait out the storm. Almost as quickly as it began, the deluge stopped and the young congressman and Father Paul emerged from the church. The two men walked north on Madison, talking quietly as they turned the corner at 10th Street; the Packard followed, a short distance behind.

Message: "Wild Bill" Cherrin had always loved airplanes. When the chauffeur was called to the Wilmington Airport he arrived early, parked the black Packard that he was driving, lit his trademark cigar and walked into the small building that in 1949 served as the terminal at the small airport on the DuPont Highway. From the building Bill watched a Cessna "Bobcat" circle the field, neatly land on the runway and taxi up to the terminal. In what seemed only a moment, two men in their early thirties were out of the plane; neither of them carried any luggage. "Hello, I'm John Van Arsdale," the young pilot said, reaching out his hand to Cherrin who was the only person waiting in the terminal. "I don't usually land in Wilmington," he remarked, "but the congressman's father asked me to stop off on our way back to Boston to pay his respects to an old friend at Sacred Heart Church. We're not on any schedule," Van Arsdale added, "I'll gas up and be ready to go whenever you get back."

I am not the author; that would be Daniel Statnekov, a 50 plus year friend of mine. I am posting for Daniel since he is overseas and cannot post from there. He can, however, view the site and I know he sincerely appreciates your comment as well as others who have also commented on his story, The Jewish Fish. Personally, although a native Wilmingtonian, I am learning a great deal of nostalgia from his story. And yes, "Wild Bill Cherrin" was my father.

Message: When Jacob Statnekoo lifted the exhausted carp out of the street--with the same hands that had once held the reins of a galloping horse and lovingly held his five children--Father Paul, with his loving heart and lifetime of pastoral experience was united with the Jewish cabinetmaker in a way that neither men could have ever imagined. Jacob had brought the painted fish into the priest's sight, along with the unintelligible letters painted on its side which formed a Latin word that was immediately recognizable to the priest. It was the first word in Psalm 51, Father Paul's favorite, a word that he remembered from his final examination at the Boston Latin School; the very same word which, 41 years earlier he had spelled correctly--with a final "e"--to win the Dixson prize. The priest's lips moved silently as he softly repeated the first line of the psalm to himself: "Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam," which in English translates as: "Have mercy upon me, Oh God, after Thy great goodness."

Message: Father Paul was born in Boston in 1889, six years after the Sacred Heart Church in Wilmington was dedicated and seven years after Jacob Statnekov, who had been born in a rural village outside of Kiev, Russia in 1882. As a boy, the future priest had a contemplative nature and it soon became apparent that he was destined to become a member of the clergy. Born into a prominent New England family, the future pastor attended the prestigious Boston Latin School where he won the coveted Dixwell Prize for excellence in Latin and graduated in 1908. In 1914 (the year Father Paul arrived in Wilmington), Jacob Statnekoo had already lived in the city for eight years and was working at the Pullman shops where the cabinetmaker was known as a man with "magic hands" because of the excellence of his work. Throughout his life Jacob never told anyone about the silver cross that he had been awarded for bravery; in this way he was similar to Father Paul who never told anyone that he had been awarded the Dixwell Prize either.

Message: ....Despite the recent deluge, the river was clear enough for everyone to see the iridescent, purple flash--in the definite outline of a fish--before the creature sank into the murky depths. Other than Bill having been directed to drive to the Wilmington zoo, it had been a silent ride in the limousine to the river and on their return trip to the Sacred Heart Church at 10th and Madison where Jacob Statnekoo and his grandson got out of the car. Father Paul had a few last words with the stranger before he was driven back to the airport. The chauffeur was discreet and Bill didn't listen in on the men's conversation, but he remembered Father Paul's final remark to his passenger as the priest stepped out of the car: "When you get home, Jack, please give your parents my love, and don't forget to tell your Dad that even though its been 41 years, I can still remember most of those words we memorized together at The Boston Latin School; tell him that I saw one today, painted on the side of a fish!"

Message: As with all vivid events, such as the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, or the first moon landing in 1969, people who witness an historic event have diverse memories; this was certainly true for what occurred in 1949 when the "Jewish" fish escaped what seemed its fatal destiny in the Statnekoo kitchen and swam a half a block up Monroe St. where it was recaptured in the street next to the Sacred Heart playground. "Wild Bill" Cherrin had already had an unusual day before being hailed by his customer to assist the priest and the cabinetmaker maneuver a wash tub which contained the painted fish into the back of his car. As directed, Bill drove over to Van Buren St., turned right and proceeded directly to the Wilmington zoo on North Park Drive where he parked in the lot at the river's edge. The priest and Bill's passenger carried the metal tub the few steps to the river where they tipped it over. Everyone watched as the painted fish slid down the low embankment and slip gently beneath the surface of the water.

Message: Although the well dressed stranger was unknown to Officer Smith, he recognized the driver of the automobile as Bill Cherrin, a local man who lived on Connell St. Until the stock market crash in 1929, Cherrin had owned a private limousine service in Wilmington but for the past twenty years, Bill had driven for another company. Occasionally, the two men had played pool together at Grady's billiard hall on Orange St., but Bill, who was considered to be Wilmington's best pool player, had never been bested by anyone (with the exception of an occasional loss to Wilmington's World Champion, Jimmy Caras). As the tub which contained the painted fish was being loaded into the limousine, "Wild Bill," as Cherrin was affectionally called by his friends, exchanged a warm greeting with the policeman and told him that he had picked the stranger up at the airport and was scheduled to return his passenger later that same day; the man's visit to Sacred Heart to see Father Paul was the only reason he was in Wilmington.

Message: The well-dressed stranger raised his gloved hand and beckoned toward a long, black automobile which, unseen by everyone, had been parked, idling at the curb at 10th St. In what seemed moments, the car pulled up and the priest and the stranger, along with Jacob and his grandson, were seated in the car with the tub that contained the recaptured fish. Father Paul and the cabinetmaker sat in the back seat with the tub at their feet and the well-dressed stranger sat up front with the driver, who wore a cap with a visor (similar to the cap worn by Officer Smith when he was in his uniform), while Danny sat on a small, folding seat next to the fish. When the car drove away, the crowd dispersed, everyone returning to their homes, most of which were only half a block away. On their way home, Sarah and Anna bought 6 cans of salmon at the corner grocery store. When Clement returned home, he removed the door from the cage of his pigeon coop; from that day forward, his birds were free to come and go as they pleased.

Message: I remember that the penny balsa wood gliders were great fliers. The wing could be adjusted fore and aft to get them to loop or long flight. The larger balsa plane with the prop also had wheels to enable the prop to clear the ground. They were able to take off with rubber band power, but the torque caused the toy plane to turn and strike the ground after a short flight. We kids spent a lot of time playing with the smaller ones, they were a lot of fun.

Message: Without a doubt it was a fated convergence: including the six year-old boy, there were four members of the Statnekoo household, the priest and the well dressed stranger, a small group of people (all of whom lived in the Sacred Heart neighborhood) and, last but not least, the exhausted and paint-smeared fish. Most of the paint had washed away but the carp was still outlined--from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail--in bright, iridescent purple, along with some haphazard streaks of paint on it's side which formed a few--seemingly random--letters that spelled an unintelligible word. It was Father Paul who stopped Sarah Statnekoo from clunking the fish over its head with her rolling pin. The Sacred Heart priest astounded everyone by declaring that he wanted to save the fish; then, to everyone's further astonishment, he gave the Statnekoo matriarch a ten dollar bill! Relieving Anna of her saucepan, the Old Priest scooped just enough from the small stream at the curb to cover the carp with water.

Message: Clement Bacon's brother caught up with the fish at nearly the exact spot opposite where Father Paul and the well-dressed stranger were standing next to the fence which separated the playground of the school from the sidewalk. Wearing his black, rubber electrician's boots, Willard stepped into the shallow water in the gutter, blocking the way of the painted carp; it could proceed no further. Father Paul stepped forward, as well, to see what had brought everyone to that spot. With one hand Jacob firmly grasped the carp behind its head, sliding his other hand under the fish's belly he deftly lifted it into the tub, where it lay unharmed, but gasping for air. The cabinetmaker's hands were gentle but capable; they were the same hands that had held the reins of his horse as they galloped through an encirclement of Japanese machine guns to seek help for his comrades at the battle of Mukden in 1904, an act of courage for which he had won the silver cross which he still carried in the pocket of his trousers.

Message: From the Old Priest's perspective, what he saw sloshing up Monroe St. was not a ragtag procession, it was a small group of neighbors, all of whom Father Paul had known for most of their lives. The Smith boy's parents had come to the church for Irish dancing, Willard and Clement Bacon had prayed there before shipping out, and he knew Sarah Statnekoo and her daughter, Anna, from having purchased steaming bowls of Sarah's vegetable soup at the family's corner store, ever since the store had opened in the 1920's. When he needed someone to make a special repair to the fine woodwork in his sanctuary, Father Paul would usually call on Jacob, who he knew was a skilled cabinet maker. Within a few seconds the priest discerned that the group was intent on overtaking something that was swimming in the fast moving stream of water that flowed against the curb. By this time, however, the flow of water was rapidly diminishing and he could see that the group was following an unusual fish, a most unusual fish, indeed.

Message: Even though he was known as the "Old Priest," Father Paul wasn't the first priest who had served at Sacred Heart; in fact, he wasn't even the first priest at the church named "Father Paul." Wendelin Mayer, who had purchased Wilmington's old circus grounds and who had "stood shoulder-to-shoulder" with his parishioners to dig the church basement (and who slipped medals of St. Benedict between the bricks as the church walls were constructed), had died two years before the church was dedicated in 1883. Following Rev. Mayer, a succession of Priests had held the position of "director" at Sacred Heart. Everyone in the parish loved Father Paul and was proud of the sanctuary with its great pipe organ. The church architect had also designed the Grand Theatre on Market Street and Father Paul used to joke with Jacob Statnekoo that since the choir section of the church organ had been installed in 1906, the same year that Jacob had arrived in Wilmington, perhaps he would consider becoming part of the choir, too.....

Message: Although the saying (which, for many years had circulated in the Sacred Heart neighborhood): "that even the smallest of creatures carries a sun in it's eyes," was undoubtedly true, the question of whether any creature, other than a human being, has a soul, let alone a soul with a "sacred obligation," had never been contemplated by Clement Bacon nor, probably, by any of the people who were following the painted fish that had crossed 9th St. and was swimming up Monroe toward the playground at the Sacred Heart School. If someone had asked that question, it's likely that everyone would answer that this was a question best left to the clergy. Besides the little group following along after the fish, there were two other men--unseen by anyone in the group--who stood quietly in the middle of the block, with their backs against the fence that separated the playground from the street: one was the old priest and the other was a younger man, very well dressed who was wearing gray gloves and a gray fedora hat

Message: Clement Bacon knew everyone in the group and he understood that somehow the painted fish (although he couldn't imagine why it was painted) had escaped the Statnekoo kitchen; why else would Anna and her mother be chasing a fish up Monroe Street? When the carp's head rose up out of the water, Clement did not see the tear that Danny saw fall from the fish's eye; what Clement saw was a lost and frightened creature, desperate to find it's way to peace and safety. In that moment, something happened to Clement, too. Something similar to what had happened to him when he shipped out and the tune from Artie Shaw's rendition of "Begin the Beguine" had stuck in his mind. When he saw the fish rise up out of the water, the last line in his favorite story, "The Escape of the King's Parrot" came into his head: over and over, like a mantra, Clement heard the parrot's final answer to the king's question: "Because.... it is the Sacred Obligation ....of Every Soul.... to be Free."

Message: Born in the mid-teens of the 20th Century, since the early 1930's Clement Bacon had kept a small flock of homing pigeons which lived in a coop on the roof of his house, across the street from the Statnekoo household. When the monumental cloudburst ended, the first thing that Clement did was go up on his roof to check on his pigeons. Looking down from his roof he saw the small crowd of neighbors that had gathered at the gate that opened into the Statnekoo courtyard. Within a minute or two Clement had joined the others at the opening; he had a brief glimpse of the painted fish before it suddenly bolted across the flooded sidewalk and swam between his legs into the flooded street. Drenched from ankle to apron strings, Mrs. Statnekoo and her daughter rushed by him waving a rolling pin and a sauce pan, respectively. Danny's Grandfather, Jacob, followed, carrying a galvanized metal tub and so for Clement, too, whatever it was that was happening was a unique and most curious event.

Message: My dad talked about Pearl Habor, he left his freshman year at Penn State College to join the Marines. The ship he was onnwas heading for the South Pacific and was hit by the Japanese airplanes and he was injured along with others and so many died on the ship. Dad had a hard time talking about it, so a few years before he died my brother video taped him and he got a lot of off his chest and I think that helped him heal some.

On the day President Kennedy was shot, I was in my Sophomore year of high schoolr, sitting in Latin class, when the announcement was made over the loudspeaker. I vividly remember our teacher, Mr. Braun, gasping, and saying, " Oh my God ". As I recall, it was a somber Friday night in Hedgeville, with hardly anyone moving about, and an eerie fog had set in.

little stars going up in the windows of the homes
in our hood depicting that some guy or gal was
away protecting us and what we stand for. When
the war ended, that stands out in my memory
vividly. All the people hugging and crying for joy
because they knew their loved ones were going
to be coming home, those that made it anyway.

Not knowing what it meant, I ran to my father and told him (perhaps the first example of my reporting). The next day, sitting in our classroom at Alexis I. duPont Elementary School on Kennett Pike, we listened on the classroom PA system as President Roosevelt told Congress it was "a day that will live in infamy." Twenty-two years later, I was on WDEL reporting that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. Where were you on those historic and tragic days?

Message: Although the six year-old boy was not the closest one in the group to the fish when it's head broke the surface of the water, Danny could clearly see its wide-open eyes, the sight of which startled him beyond his years; it was something that he would remember for the rest of his life. It didn't seem like the same powerful fish that had frightened him when he watched it floating in the metal tub; somehow the fish seemed different. Perhaps it had never looked up out of the water when it was captive in his Buba's kitchen, and of course it wasn't covered with paint at the time. Although this may seem outlandish--and this is what the boy would always remember--as its head rose above the flooded street, Danny thought that he saw a tear fall from the eye of that fish. Perhaps in extreme circumstances, and if the saying is true: "That even the smallest of creatures carries a sun in its eyes," then perhaps it could happen that even a fish, desperate for its freedom and its life, can indeed cry.

Message: ....and so, as they watched the painted fish, swimming with all its heart, in the direction of what had been its home in the cool and pleasant waters of Wilmington's Brandywine River, although they may not have been conscious of it, nor would anyone in the little procession that day have been able to express it, something stirred deep within each of them, an echo perhaps, of the primeval urge that had caused each and every one of them to seek and treasure the freedom in their own lives. And then there was that moment when the fish crossed 9th Street and it's head came up out of the water for a moment, with streaks of yellow and blue and green fingerpaint from Danny's paintings still clinging to its wet, slippery skin. In that moment, the carp seemed to roll its eyes toward the blue sky above, as if it wanted a final glimpse of the natural world, the free world into which it had been born and from which, without some sort of intervention, it would soon depart.

I remember at St. Hedwig's grade school, all classes had the same lunch break and recess times. Lunch first, then recess on Linden St., which was blocked off from Van Buren to Harrison, and in, what is now the parking lot next to the school and behind what was then the Convent. Most of us walked home for lunch. My house was 3 blocks away. Only the car/bus riders from those 'far away places', like Richardson Park, were allowed to eat their ' brought in ' lunches under the school. No 'served' lunches. Message: John and Eugene Smith's family had escaped the poverty of Ireland while the Iudika family had emigrated from Italy; both families had come for the same reason: because America held the promise for a new life, and Mr. Iudika had made a new life for himself and his family. Ross' Barbershop on the N.E. corner of 8th and Monroe was a stable fixture in the neighborhood and the barber had plans to move uptown where, in fact, he would become even more successful at his Shipley St. location. Even Danny's grandmother, Sarah Zutz, had fled her ancestral home in Russia with the dream for a new life in a land where people had "unalienable rights"; what a thought for a poor, Jewish girl: to be able to live her life in "the land of the free." Along with his brother, Gene, Officer Smith had found a good job after high school, but he was not respected just because he was a policeman, he was respected because everyone knew that John Smith was a man with a good heart who wanted everyone in our city to live a peaceful life.

Message: It would be impossible to reconstruct what anyone was thinking that day in 1949, as they followed the paint-besmeared fish that was trying with all its might to make its way to freedom in the flooded street. Now that more than 60 years has passed, I can imagine some of the possibilities: In the beginning, of course, Danny's grandmother and his aunt were intent on recapturing the carp to make into gefelte fish for their holiday meal. Clement Bacon, whose love for animals was well known to everyone in the neighborhood, and who became a noted farrier (horseshoer) in the Wilmington area, was probably the person who was most empathetic toward creatures of all kinds. Danny's grandfather, who carried the metal washtub, also carried--in his pocket--the silver cross that had been awarded to him for bravery for breaking out of an encirclement of Japanese machine guns. In fact, everyone in the procession had a familial memory of the quest and hunger for freedom.

Message: Not knowing what else to do, everyone followed the fish, led by Sarah Statnekoo who still clutched her rolling pin. Not to be left behind, the six year-old, Danny Stat, ran out of the house and joined the procession. Immersed in the water that had overflowed the curb, the carp headed north in the fast-moving current. The cloudburst had ended as suddenly as it had begun and the water in the street had turned 9th Street into a small river. Everyone sloshed along on the sidewalk, following the brightly colored fish, which was illuminated by the afternoon sun that had appeared after the storm. Tony Iudika was worried that the reservoir might give way and 40 million gallons of water would drown us all, but Officer Smith reassured everyone that unless there was an earthquake, that that was impossible, or nearly so, and if it did give way the water would run down 10th St. from VanBuren, so we didn't have to worry; after all, the reservoir had been supplying the neighborhood with its water for more than 70 years.

Message: Nothing had prepared any of the neighbors, not even the policeman, for an event of this nature. The courtyard was awash and within moments water spilled through the open gate and over the sidewalk where it merged with the water in the flooded street. The two women's antics had brought Danny's grandfather out of the house, as well. Always thoughtful, the former Russian war hero carried the metal wash tub that had held the powerful "Jewish" fish which--until it's escape--had been destined to become a platter of fish cakes for the Statnekoo holiday meal. Danny watched from the partially open kitchen window from which the fish had unceremoniously escaped its captivity and its intended fate. Before anyone could collect their wits and act in any manner whatsoever, the iridescent fish, with a wave of its powerful tail, darted out of the courtyard and across the sidewalk, swimming right between Clement Bacon's legs, into the roiling water which flowed north, toward Sacred Heart and Wilmington High School.

Message: Officer Smith arrived--from his childhood home--which was only 3 doors down from the Statnekoo household at the corner of 9th and Monroe. John's brother, Eugene, was only a few steps behind him; and within what seemed only another minute the Bacon brothers, Clement and Willard, who lived across the street on the west side of Monroe and Mr. Iudika along with his son, Tony, were all gathered at the open gate, mouths agape, as they watched the scene that was unfolding in the courtyard. The Statnekoo matriarch and her daughter, Anna, one wielding a rolling pin and the other a sauce pan, splashed around in ankle-deep water; chasing, and occasional swatting at, what looked like a technicolor fish that flashed blue, green and yellow iridescence as it swam in the shallow water that had pooled around a fountain that had erupted beneath the now-horizontal wooden gate.
