Message: Bartkowski's had good 'pickles from the beczka' ( pickles from the barrel). When we lived on N. Broom, Jack Lundy's, on Miller Rd., was our favorite for pickles from the barrel, lunchmeats, bagels, and especially bagels with lox. At one time, in the 90's, the Dunkin Donuts on the Kirkwood Highway, near Limestone Rd., had bagels with cream cheese and lox, and they were superb.

Message: Dave, I believe the Gamiel brothers owned a restaurant on 7th St. between Market and King that we called Reubens. Maybe we called it that because they had the best Reuben sandwiches and great Kosher food. Seems to me that the New York Restaurant was owned by a Greek fellow. Sometime back, someone wrote about the guy who owned it.

You local folks don't know how much I appreciate reading about what the "old" places have become - like the Ranch House. I don't get to DE much - I know the Webmaster doesn't like topics from recent times, but I doubt an occasional mention hurts. I'm glad Danny Stat got away with his fish story.

That was Ragan's tavern, a Polish bar, on S. Van Buren and Chestnut, that had the good ham sandwiches. It was run by Casimir(Caz) and Zenon(Zenny) Ragan, two brothers, who before that, had Ragan's Bakery on Maryland Ave, between Linden and Elm. Their father had the bakery before them.

When my family moved here in the sixties, I grew up going to the Ivy Stone on Kirkwood (best salad dressing!), the Peter Pan Diner, The Dutch Pantry, Pappy's (when it was new it was a delight), Mr. Steak, The Farmer in the Dell. All gone, but the best was Pery's without question. I wish someone had a photo of the place. And don't get me started on missing movie theaters! I'd kill even for old Triangle Mall's cinema! What an eyesore that office stretch is! Remember Grant's coffee Shop there?

Google Maps still shows a street level shot of New Castle Plaza on Rt 9 and the same corner spot in it where Peri's was is still there in the shot, same sadly covered windows. Alas, when I went in to speak with the folks running the (then) new place, the long established cook had passed away from that tragedy, so the food was no doubt different. Message: played Creedence Clearwater (Out My Back Door), Burning Love, I Can Help, and various others from the day (when I hear certain songs I call "Peri's Songs"- I can almost taste that sauce again...almost). The pasta was home made too, and Peri's was in that little plaza on the right as you are driving from New Castle on Route 9 heading to the bridge.
Understand that area was much better kept than it is now. Last time I saw that plaza, the left side of it where Peri's was located has windows that are either boarded up or they have brown paper covering them, very ominous looking. Hard to imagine for many, I am sure, that long ago it was a place much loved. Again, this restaurant was amazing and thrived for those decades and if anyone remembers it or has a picture, please put it up somewhere. I went there with my family from about age 7 to 20. I know someone who goes to Rubinos only because "It's been all that's left since Peri's." So true.

Message: Hello all- I'd just like to ask again about Peri's (Pery's) Restaurant just outside of Old New Castle. A fabulous family restaurant from the 1960's to the 1980's it had a spaghetti sauce that trounced all restaurants in the area, and those of us that grew up going there have tried to replicate it for years to no avail. The lady cook kept the recipe to herself. When the restaurant changed hands in the late 80's I went in to ask what happened to Peri's, and two men at the bar sadly related this story. The lady cook in mention had a house at the end of a curve in a road, and one night she was killed while sleeping in her bed by a drunk driver crashing through her bedroom wall! I will never forget the man at the bar sadly shaking his head and saying, "That recipe died with her." I understood his feelings. This is the stuff of legend, folks, and there is no mention of Peri's on the web, not even a passing reference. This was THE place to eat in that era for us in New Castle. Checkered table cloths, a jukebox that

Thanks for the memory of Huber's Sporting Goods Store. I suppose it is no longer there.
Anybody remember buying tickets in the cubby hole above Bag and Baggage for concerts/sporting events? For popular events there would be a line down the steep flight of stairs to 9th street..

Message: Thanks for the Chadwick's info. Good to know someone else even remembers his store!

In the mid 50s there were 2 stores where we could buy our cordoroy school jackets. One was Huber's Sporting Goods at 216 W. 9th St. Does anyone remember the name of the other shop?

One day, possibly early to mid 50s, we were waiting to cross Vandever Ave at Market St. and a car turned right onto Vandever with no one behind the wheel. The driver had ducked down so it looked as if the car had no driver and a guy was telling them what to do. Were any of you out there involved with that? We all knew what was really going on, but it was still funny. :D

Message: During the 1940s we lived in Westhaven and frequently watched the airmail pick-ups by planes at the old DuPont Airport. Mail bags attached to a line draped over poles like football goal posts were snatched by a hook at the end of a pole beneath the planes and the bags were hauled into the planes. The same technique was later tested by the Army at the DuPont field for picking up troop-carrying gliders. They weren't always completely successful. One time an Army glider made a crash landing in our baseball field along Greenwood Road in Westover Hills.

Message: The recently announced merger plans of American and US Airways reminded me of the early origins of the two companies. The US Airways component began as All American Aviation in the 40's providing air mail service before it turned to passengers. Initially the mail bags were suspended on a cable and "snatched" by the low flying aircraft. I believe this occurred at the old DuPont Airfield (Lancaster Pike and Center Roads). I vaguely recall seeing this pickup in operation, or perhaps what I saw was a demonstation after the actual practice had ended. Anyone have any information about this?

I think he went by 'Blackie' or Jim when at that school.....and was the 'new kid' from Baltimore. After attending many schools, he usually would try to pick out the toughest kid at school and fight him, so other's would leave him alone....He said he made a Volcano for Mrs. Grey in her science class.

My dad didn't have the best family unit ('rebel without a cause'), but Mrs Grey made an indelible impression. He always wished he had found her years later to thank her. Although he never went beyond the 9th grade in High School, he did eventually go to Grad school, even took some doctoral classes, and he thinks Mrs Grey positive impact contributed to his later success in life. I know he'd love to be able to thank her or her living relatives.

Mom had his personal home number to call in the middle of the night if you needed him and he would come to the our house. If you needed a prescription he would call our pharmacy located on the corner of 7th. and Jackson St. and Mr. Cahill (spelling?) would fill the prescription in the middle of the night. Those were the days when the doctors and Pharmacists cared about you. The Dr.would bill you a small amount, my mom would pay the bill at the end of the month when dad got paid from Duponts. ;-)

Message: My favorite Park Guard was Mr. Hall, was introduced to him on my first school day in 1937. He wore the Park Guard uniform, but without the gun and holster. He may have been of retirement age. He insured we cross Adams St. & S. Park Drive safely, and watch us all the way to the Washington St. Bridge steps. Made sure we stayed away from the "crick". Always wondered in later years if he needed help for an emergency, without portable radios, what he would do. There were not any homes on that stretch of Park Drive.

Charlie (who later became a well-respected State Police Officer) had taken off the mufflers on his Royal Enfield twin and when I backed off on the throttle as I passed the zoo a Park "Guard" who was standing next to some of the cages motioned for me to pull over. Since I was 17 or 18 years-old at the time, I ignored him; after all, I was on a fast bike on the street and the "Guard" was on foot standing up on the embankment by one of the animal cages. The officer's radio caught up with me when I stopped for the light at Mkt. St. and for the 3rd summer in a row, I once again was 'requested' to surrender my driver's license to the Motor Vehicle Dept. ........
