They had a very nice party for him at the Jeanne Jugan Residence, Little Sisters of the Poor. He was in great spirits. He attributed his long life and 73year priesthood to GOD. The Dialogue covered the event with and interview and some nice photographs. He is the first priest in the Diocese of Wilmington to reach 100 years of age.

Message: I was one of the kids who painted store front windows for Halloween when I was in Jr. High. We also spent a lot of time at Monkey Hill - rode our bikes down the grass hill ONE time. Once was enough!
We also made numerous trips to the Merryland Roller Rink in the 1960s. Met a lot of Bainbridge Training Center sailors there on Wednesday nights - so Wednesday nights at the Merryland became a MUST!

Employers: U.S. Army, State of Dela.(retired)
Message: One has probably less of a chance of getting mugged, robbed, stabbed, shot, raped or killed down at the Waterfront Polish Festival than if it was still held at St. Hedwig's Church.

Don't know how ' one ' Priest ', Father Molewski, is doing everything, and how the Parish is still surviving. He has no Deacons. There are only 3 Ministries : the Religious Education Ministry, the Choir Ministry, and the Music Ministry. Gone are the nuns (Felicians, when I was there), and the school. The school buildings, and the Convent have either been sold or are being rented out to Social Service organizations.

I do miss, however, the old Polish Carnival, when it was at St. Hedwig's Church. Never been to one down at the waterfront. Wouldn't be the same.

Everyone seem to know him even when I traveled many States away from Delaware. He lived to be 69 years of age. I always wanted to be like him, but I never felt like I could measure up. I do my best and take it one day at a time.

I usually (when possible) watch as each item is rung up. I also have an idea what the bill might be before I go shopping. Then I check it against the total on the recept and if off by a lot, I check the items on the receipt.

Message: I must have lived in the best neighborhood ever. 1500 block Van Buren St. where I learned to step off my block and make my way to #24 School. We kids from the area walked to school in groups. My dad was never out of work, lucky I guess. Never was drafted in the Second World War, fractured skull in auto accident in his youth made him not acceptable. All neighbors took responsibility to oversea a safe environment. Happy Valley a beautiful place to go to school from 1937=1943 at #24 School.

Message: Good memories of our neighborhood grocery stores :-) There are so few, big grocery stores have caused so many to close their doors. It was so wonderful growing up in the city of Wilm and area , never locked your doors, neighbors helped each other, looked out for each others kids. Sitting on front porches or steps was fun and my mom's neighbor friends coming in with their cup of coffee or tea for a visit, sharing the lastest gossip . Catching lightening bugs in a jar and mom making us let them go free and sounds of the crickets at night. I love where I live in the country and my home backs up to woods and spend a lot of time sitting out back, but we only wave to our neighbors and never invite them over unless it is holiday cookout it just not the same.

The one at 10th and Adams could have been Tony's as has been suggested, just do not recall. As for Nord's I sure recall the long pole to grab cereal boxes. Worked there for awhile delivering grocery items. Never recall a delivery east of the store always west, which was the area torn down. Don Wood

Message: I remember that grocer at 23rd and Tatnall. After they left there was an outlet for one of the bakeries, then later a real estate office.

There was a grocery store near the Strand theatre on Market between 24th and 25th. They used one of those long poles with a 'clipper" on the end. The woman who worked there was named Ann and I remember seeing a drawing of "Ann Page" on A & P products and I thought the lady who worked there was Ann Page.

Message: Maureen,
I remember a corner store directly across from Nord's on Adams. I thought it was Tony's. They sold candy, ice cream and some groceries. My aunt lived on Adams between 9th and 10Th and lost her apartment to I-95. That was the start of the decline of Wilmington as we knew it - along with the riots in 1968.

Message: Our neighborhood store was Neugebauers. It was located at 23rd and Tatnall Sts. Mr. Neugebauer was a butcher by trade. He sold the best meats, fresh vegetables and penny candy. This was back in the 40's. His nephew, Junior, was the delivery boy. Junior's cat had kittens and Jr. gave me one when I was about five years old. Junior would load our groceries into an "express wagon" and haul them down the street for us. Down the street was a block or so. The Neugebauer's son, Joe, was killed during WW2 during the Normandy invasion. It was a very sad time in the neighborhood. Connie, you must remember that store since your grandparents lived right down 23rd Street.

My family lived on 10th Adams St. till the state bought the homes and the businesses on that side from Delaware Ave. south, Jackson and Adams St. to Maryland Ave. We moved to 819 N. Jackson St. and the neighborhood kids made a baseball field across from our home when the state knocked down the houses for I- 95.

Both the brothers have passed on to bigger and better places out of this world.Spent many summers camping during the summer months, great times. I only know Don Wood from posts on this site.
