Message: Since Bob Wilson mentioned me, I do recall that experience. At that point in time, driving through Elsmere was a real challenge as the police were known to stop you if you were only going a little over the 35 mph limit. One time when I was alone coming back from Elsmere, I got stopped and know I was only going 39-40 mph. The officer would not listen to a word I was saying but just gave me the ticket. It was a lose-lose proposition.

And Mario LePera will remember at least one mermber of the Elsmere police force from that long-ago night that I was stopped while driving and requested to spell the word LABORATORY. I passed the test easily, having (then) recently spent 4 years studying Chemistry at the U of Delaware. But I did have to pay a fine for 'foolish driving.' Do you still have to be as cautious as ever when driving through Elsmere?

Message: When I was a freshman at UDel just before Christmas in 1952, I signed on with the Post Office, then on Rodney Square, to deliver mail by foot. They sent me down to the neighborhood near 4th and Madison and Monroe. It was a freezing cold week. Most of the mail was Christmas cards, too big to slip in easily through the old front door slots of the houses, so I had to remove my gloves often, to jam the cards into the slots. After every half-hour of doing this, my hands (as well as the rest of me) were blue with the cold. I still thank God that there was either a corner drug store or luncheonette on one of the 4th Street corners that I could run into and down a cupful of steaming hot chocolate. I've never been as cold as that in my life ever since.

But Gene London was the best! Everything about the show...the stories, the skits, the drawings, Debbie Dibly, Quigly Mansion and the secret tunnel, the box of confetti that would fall on his head. Man, I wish I could go back there!

Oh yea, and the song...

Come right on in to the General Store
We have licorice, gumdrops and sourballs;
Anything that you're hankering for,
You'll find in Cartoon Corners General Store.

Toys to build and a big pot belly stove;
Cartoon fun with your favorites so,
Let's ring up the curtain on this show!

There's something else I've forgotten, let's see,
Of course, Gene London, that's me!"

ERNIE MABREY : Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the bakery on Chestnut and Adams, and having grown up 2 blocks away at Elm and Jackson in the 50's and 60's, don't remember the store , but appreciate the info., as a remembrance of the old neighborhood. Where did you live ?

ERNIE MABREY and RAY JUBB : I don't remember a soda store at Chestnut and Adams, but remember one , Mulvena's, at Adams and Elm. Also, I remember a boarded up, old public school at Adams and Elm, which extended to Chestnut. It was a P.S., number unknown, which was closed sometime before I was a small kid in the early 50's. I also remember a Polish Hall on the corner of Adams and Chestnut. If I remember correctly it was called or had a Polish organization within it , called " Kasa Chorych ", translating to " Sickness or patient's fund ". I used to go there once a month for my aunt, Jane Turoczy, to make a payment, and in return, receive a quarter from her.

Message: To Ernie Mabrey: Ernie I hung out for a time in the
mid to late 40's at Chestnut & Adam Streets. On the N.E. Corner was the Amalgamated Leather Factory, on the N.W. Corner was a little soda shop, on the S.W. Corner was a Church that had a Club under same caled tha "Polish National Knights of Colombus". Now the only corner I'm not sure of, and it seems to me it was an empty lot was the S.E. Corner. In the block South of that corner was a Boarded up old Public School, it had a number that I don't recall and it was used by someone as a warehouse.

JERRY LANK : I saw from a previous posting that your wife worked at Equifax. I worked for Equifax at the Fairfax location for several months ,part time, somewhere in the mid to late 70's. Two names that I remember are Nick D'Amico and the General Manager, last name Green. Any connections ?

Message: Truly a sad story of the closing of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church on the East Side. It served its purpose well for generations of Polish and non-Polish families. Sadly, there might be some other city Church closings in another generation or two. Even though I attended St. Hedwig's Church and school, I have some close ties and fond memories of St. Stan's. Maternal and paternal sides of my family grew up on the East Side : 6th and Church, 7th and Church, 701 Bennett St., E. 6th St., Curlett St. They all attended St. Stan's Church and many went to the school. My great aunt ,Cecilia Mical, even though she moved from the East Side years before and lived in Cleland Heights, would still attend Mass at St. Stan's. My Dad attended the school until 4th grade, and then started working. The Polish wedding receptions in the Hall were the best. I remember them starting at about noon and lasting until midnight sometimes( in the 50's and 60's ). Caught a glimpse and stared all night at my first, soon to be, real girlfriend there, at a family,Bartkowski,wedding ( too shy, then, to engage ).

Message: The Merchandise Mart was hot stuff when it opened, particularly for its vast parking lot where my dad taight me how to drive the family Buick in the early 1950's, probably in 1951.The Blue Laws were still in effect back then, and all of the stores there were closed on Sundays. Then the malls up on the Concord Pike were developed, and they did to the Merchandise Mart what the Merchandise Mart did to Market Street. If I could weep, I would do so when I'm on an Amtrak train heading toward Philly three or four times a year, when I look out to the left and see the sad remains of the Strawbridge building and the other businesses like Mulllin's Clothiers that once thrived there. Heck, I can still remember the great Mullins store when it was down at 6th and Market...

Message: Sorry folks, one last reminiscence for the day. A Hedgeville neighbor shared this story with me. After I-95 came and cut through Elm St. between Jackson and Adams, Ziggy B., who lost his house on Elm St., was observed one day afterwards, standing alone on the sidewalk in front of what used to be his residence, muttering the Polish phrase, " Tu stoj moja dom ", translating, " Here stood my house ". How sad ! I also miss my neighborhood, the way it used to be.

Message: I, too, remember the newspaper garage across from Stellini's. Helped out my buddy, Joe C., several times with his route, picking up the bundles there around 1960. The rest of the block, I think, was a park with a lot of bare dirt. My Dad used to get our pepperoni at Stellini's.
Concerning the Merchandise Mart: I haven't been by there in several years, and I don't think there were any open buildings. I can't recall when it was no longer a shopping center. Had some good memories of it. My buddy Bill K.'s mom used to work at the Hoy's. Remember going with him and his Dad and sisters to pick her up from work. Remember being dropped off there with him, once, in the mid 60's to do some Christmas shopping, then walking back to Hedgeville at night. Murray's men's clothing store was a favorite for my brother John and I , once girls entered our lives. They had nice suits.

Message: To Whom It May Concern: Hi, my name is William Francis and I recently co-authored a photographic history book on the DuPont Highway for Arcadia Publishing, due out March 2. I have been investigating a minor league football team that existed in Wilmington before and after WWII called the Wilmington Clippers. I have gathered info and photos at the state archives, historical society, wilmington library. I'm certain there is more available and would appreciate any information your site can provide. The team had a rebirth in the 1960's, but I am more interested in the original team. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

You had mentioned Sacred Heart a few years back they had closed the Church and then I think they had changed their mind.
A few years back I had stopped as I normally did to go in the Church but it was closed. I stopped at the Rectory ) this was when Fr Paul was still living and talked to him and he told me that someone had broke into the convent, I think that was the start of the deterioration.

THANKS AGAIN FOR REMEMBERING OUR HAPPY DAYS STORE.

Message: Jerry T - Walt Lafferty, Mario LePera and I were all at the U. of Delaware at the same time, and in the same class year, as Dallas Green, the Conrad alumnus who pitched baseball and was on the varsity basketball team for the Hens. Yes I remember that snow storm. The snow was so high about 2 feet, people were climbing out their windows,because the door's would not open. Most storm doors open to the outside.as they do today.
