Hi Bob: I have two suggestions. In the event the death notice was missed in the paper, look up the name of the deceased in the obituaries at delawareonline. com, or write to the Bureau of Vital Statistics at:
Office of Vital Statistics
Jesse S. Cooper BLDG
417 Federal Street
Dover, DE 19901
They may provide a copy of the death certificate if you can convince them. I believe the cost is $10.
Take Care

Message: Help request to OW Nostalgia readers - (with the webmaster's permission) - I just heard that an old friend of mine, living alone in suburban Wilmington for many many years, and with no living relatives nearby, passed away either in his home or in a local hospital a couple of weeks ago. Apparently, there has been no published death notice or obituary.
Is there a city or county agency that I can contact that would be able to give me a confirmation of his passing as a metter of public knowledge?

Message: Definitely Remedio's on Lancaster Ave. for the best pizza I have ever eaten. This was back in the late 50's and early 60s. We were too young to go in the front door in those days since they served alcohol; so we went to the side window where they would pass out the pizza to us. Then, we went over to Greenhill Dairy for our drinks. Greenhill served a super orangeade as well as milkshakes.

Message: The BEST subs are the ones we make here. We only make them in the summer when we harvest our own tomato's. The local sub shop sells their rolls for 80 cents each. They are large, hard Italian rolls out of Baltimore with corn meal on the bottoms and, we use EVOO.

The other key ingredient is the oil. One of my favorite sub shops uses extra virgin olive oil and vegetable oil, in 1/3 amd 2/3 proportions , but they haven't disclosed which is which, or brand names for both.

Message: At one time, I lived across the street from the Penny Hill Sub Shop at Phila. Pike and Marsh Road. I spent a lot of time watching them make the subs. I still make them the same way at home since you can't find decent ones down here. First of all, use good Italian hard rolls and be sure to sprinkle them on the inside with good Italian olive oil (preferably from a bottle with a sprinkler on top). Then layer thinly sliced boiled ham, salami (Genoa), capacola, provolone cheese, shredded lettuce, thinly sliced tomatoes, thinly sliced sweet onion, and hot peppers (if you like). Then, more olive oil and Italian seasonings (dried). According to your taste, add whatever you especially like. But that's basically it. Slide a long knife between the halves lengthwise and flip the left side on top of the right and press down. I wrap in wax paper since I don't have butcher paper and let set for about 15 minutes before enjoying. Hope you like it. This is just the way Pete made them and after that Mary Kay who bought the business from Pete.

They were started in 1887 . Their names were war chest, later, community chest, then red feather. Then in 1978, a goal of one million dollars was reached. It was called United fund, then United Way. In 1996, they raised their two million dollar goal. You usually got a small plastic pin,[ hat, lapel ] to show you contributed. Later on, a sticker, decal, or small car window sticker .Now, I think a red feather represents a student of the Independent school.

Message: I had a flashback the other night about a feather. It seems to me that some charity used to use a feather (maybe red) as its symbol when collecting funds for its cause. I can remember receiveing a little plastic feather when you made a contribution. My memory however doesn't allow me to remember the purpose of this particular charity. I think it may have evolved into something larger. Does anyone else remember the little red feather, and what it supported?

Thank you for clearing up my memory of that site at Maryland Avenue and Seventh Avenue. The cars were traveling slower in those days so we all survived but it still makes me wonder.

It had the mansion house, a second house (which was 4 1/2 Seventh Avenue) and a large barn. Peggy, my cousin, lived in the second house with her parents, Thomas and Clara Corbett. Our family, that bought the property about 1922, sold it all in 1979. All of it still stands today and is privately owned by the gentleman that bought it in 1979. The vacant lot that you spoke of was on the corner and a printing plant was eventually built on the lot. I do not know what is there now.

My Dad bought our Lionel train set from there for our oldest brother Fred, circa 1938, when he was approx. 3 years old. It was passed down to my brother John and eventually me to play with, but my brother Fred retained posssesion since it was originaaly bought for him. It is still in excellent condition, and the cars are still in the original boxes. I remember we would put a white pellet in the smokestack of the engine which would heat up and give off smoke. That set should be worth a pretty penny now at approx. 70 years old.
I also remember the junkshop, just down from DP&L. Once my buddy Bill and I hauled his grandparents( Stepnowski's, 100 block S. Jackson ) old bathtub from their house to that junkyard on his old wagon.

You asked about Susan Yellow, the late-night dj at WILM back in the late 60's.... I remember her well! I actually talked to her at a Claymont Fire Hall battle of the bands (she was a fox). Susan Yellow (probably not her real name) was the coolest thing happening on local AM radio, using her sultry voice to introduce us to the music that would soon define our generation (everything from Otis Redding to the Grateful Dead). I learned a little about this mysterious teen angel, but I'd love to know more: she was bounced out of Catholic school (Immaculate Heart?), she attended Sallies football games, and she finally moved up to NYC to pursue radio there under a different name.
DOES ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER SUSAN YELLOW?
