Message: To: bill rogers, Did it run into Morrow Street, or was it concealed. I really don't remember anything coming through to Eighth Street. I lived on Morrow as a very little boy during the war. I actually have pictures of relatives in uniform standing out there. I also remember blackouts from that time, and the wardens that would go around to be sure the lights couldn't be seen out on the Street. There was an alley that ran behind our house there and came out back to Morrow at the house next to ours. We were at the upper end of the block (841) The alley as I remember ran the length of the block and came back out down near Eighth. It was used by the trash collectors. It wasn't until we moved to Seventh Street that we had to put our trash out at the curb. At that time they collected, ashes, bottles, and glass on one day and garbage on two others. You didn't dare mix them.

Message: There was a 'pig alley' that ran between 5th and 6th sts.and between madison and monroe. I think it was called the pig alley because it was always full of garbage. There was another one farther down the block called the 'big alley'. It was wide enough for a small car to pass thru and ran along side of the tanning factory.

Message: BILL ROGERS : Funny that you mentioned a " Pig alley " in your neighborhood. There was a " Pig alley " which ran through the midlde of my block( between Elm and Linden Sts. ) from Jackson St. to Adams.
I always wondered about the origin of the name. I assumed that in olden days , pigs were run down several alleys, through mine and down to Benjamin Sklut's Hide and Fur Co. , off Maryland Ave.

Message: Continuing on alleys and alley ways : one of my favorites was the one which ran between St. Hedwig's Church and the first house down towards Van Buren, the Skibicki house. It went to the back of the Church and then to a path or walkway between the Church and the Rectory to Harrison St. The Rectory had a nice garden behind it. In the alley way were some garages and a brick wall. After Easter was over, the nuns would use some grade school girls to take down the Easter flowers. The boys would take the potted plants behind the Church to remove tulip bulbs from the plant for future use. Clemens " Dan " Manista, now a priest in the Diocese, and I decided to throw the plants against the wall to remove the dirt, then pull off the bulb. Ingenuity ?
The youngest Skibicki, forget his first name, and a couple years older, had a loose brick in the same wall, and stashed the left over votive candles from the Church. Fun and fond memories up that alley.
I'm sure DOLORES remembers it.

Message: TOM : Alley shortcut :: On that same 200 ft. X 200 ft. block, there are 10 houses on each side of the block spaced 20 ft. apart. If I lived on one corner and wanted to walk the long way, in the rain, to my buddy's house, down the block and one house up the other side, I would have to walk 200 ft. and 20 ft.( 220 ft. ) to his front door. If I took the alley shortcut in the middle of the block, I would only have to go 100 ft. and 20 ft.( 120 ft.) to his backyard, 50 ft. more to his back door ( 170 ft. ). A savings of 50 ft. walking in the rain.

It was a great place to play on a rainy day. Also, great to run and hide when playing hide-and-go-seek. Our back yard was small but my Dad still managed to grow tomatoes and we had two beautiful lilac bushes. Those were definitely the "good old days".

Message: That alley between Franklin, Broom, Pennsylvania and 11th Street was called Kennett Place. Our family's house backed up to it. At the rear of our property, next to the gate, there was a huge, beautiful weeping Willow tree. I have no idea what's out there now. The last time I saw the house, it was no longer a home, but some kind of an office. I-95 destroyed a wonderful neighborhood.

It did have a name that I can't remember - something Place. A lot of football and baseball catches took place there. From the posts I've been reading about Wilm. Message: A silly topic, but I'll post it anyway. I used to love all the alleys in Wilmington. There were a lot in Browntown and Hedgeville. I used to love exploring them and using them as shortcuts from one location to another. Some ran through the middle of entire blocks, from one street to another, some went only part of the way through the block. When you went through one, you might meet some neighbors that you would not ordinarily see, if you didn't usually travel by the front of their houses. One of my favorites was the one I just recently mentioned in the Blog: the one between S. Harrison and S. Franklin Sts. When I was in 5th grade in St. Hedwig's, my classroom on Harrison St., faced this alley. I could look up the alley from the classroom and see people walking on Franklin St.
Another neat feature of Wilmington's row houses were the "alley" ways between two homes, which led from the front of the houses to the two neighbor's backyards. A buddy of mine, Marty, had one of these "alleys" in the 200 block S. Jackson. It was also covered on the top, usually with the same brick as the houses. When we were about 10 yrs. old, it was a great place to play when it rained. Moms made us use the alley ways to come through the back of the houses into a pantry or kitchen, rather than tracking dirt and mud through the immaculately clean living and dining rooms.

Message: Dear old Wilmington, especially Hedgeville and Browntown : I never , in my wildest dreams ever thought, when I was walking the streets of my neighborhood and adjacent ones as a youngster, that I would ever see the day when I would see the murders, stabbings, shootings that happened in the parishes of St. Hedwig's / St. Elizabeth's at the intersection of Linden and Van Buren Sts., in the 400 block S. Van Buren St., at the intersection of Harrison and Elm Sts., at the intersection of Maryland Ave. and Anchorage Sts., on Connell St., and at 312 S. Jackson St., within the last 6 years that I have moved downstate.

sure glad you remember me, our families go way back, and had many good times. Unfortunately there is only 3 siblings left, would be Wanda, Butch, and me, of course I saw your Brother Dan at my sisters funeral, which was in 1990, no one else since then.

Message: ANN PATTON : In your last post you mentioned Sunday dinners. They were special. Usually we had them in mid or late afternoon. From spring to fall, after these dinners, families used to sit out on their front steps or porches to " just enjoy " life, each other and chat with neighbors. Between Sunday morning Church and those Sunday afternoon dinners, it was so quiet in the neighborhood. Hardly anyone was up or about. I rmember that calm so vividly, and yearn for it.

Message: Saw Mary Sobocinski walking down the street in front of the Bartkowskis with parts of the old organ and she said they were putting the the wood out at the end of the driveway to be hauled away so I went up and got a short one. Can't remember when the marble came out though. It was still there when we came back and had my father's funeral there after '74.

Message: Phew! Thanks Jerry. Why would they take the marble out? I have one of the older pews made of oak and walnut with the cathedral arched and carved end faced the aisle.

Florence Sczesiak was in the Pulaski Legion band and her wedding reception was at the hall. My mom loved to dance the Oberek.

My son was in the naval scouts out of the Pulaski Legion.

Message: It would be great for the membership's safety of Pulaski Legion if it moved, and I'm sure the membership would then increase, but the charisma and the ambiance of the old building will be lost to posterity. There was a certain smell, a favorable one, to me, of the old building. Maybe it was the old wood or flooring or just the entire building. I wonder what organization would buy it, as I am sure that the building would not be torn down.
A fond memory : when I lived at 302 S. Jackson, just 6 doors up from the Legion, I remember looking out my bedroom window at nights when the Hall was occupied for either weddings, parties, reunions , meetings, etc., I could see the colored glass of the half moon window on the 2nd floor, on the north side of the building. It was also great to listen to the music, especially the Polka's and Obereks of the Polish wedidngs. I probably listened to the music of Harry's wedding there in ' 64. I was 16, then.

Message: DOLORES : St. Hedwig's Church is still physically there, but certain items such as the marble and gold have been removed. The old pews which I vaguely remember, have also been replaced with a lighter type wood. The old pews were , I believe, a darker type of wood with some sort of higher type of siding attached to or part of the pew as you entered it from the aisle. I forget the name of this feature. I think these changes came about in the late 50's or early 60's when Father Ed Wisniewski came. I remember that I was in grade school when all the remodelling took place, especially all the scaffolding when the ceilings were being re-done.

Message: Jerry T.--Your right it would be a shame if the Pulaski
legion had to close down and/or move. But it is not IF, it is WHEN. I've belonged to the Defiance A.A. for too many years to remember. We Just moved to Boxwood Rd. & Boxwood Ave., Cattycorner from the old Conrad High School. This was our second move because of the animal element that has taken over our City. We were located in 200 Block of N. Jackson Street from as early as I could remember. We had to move from there because of Members being mugged right outside our doors and if they weren't mugged they had no car when they left to go home, or their tires were gone off the car. So we stupidly moved to Browntown where as a kid I knew it to be as clean and as safe as a Church. You should see it today, no I don't mean that, please don't go see it today, for if
you happen to be one who did know it when it was nice you will probably come away with tears in your eyes, that is IF you come away. And to Jerry Lank, Jerry the area of Sacred Heart is 10 times safer than Browntown or Hedgeville and the area of 4th Street from Washington to Lincoln is so unsafe that if I were still a Police Officer I wouldn't want to go there. I live in Union Park Gardens and I have for over 47 years & I take all the precautions possible and try to tell my neighbors that we have to look out for one another, we have to be constantly aware of who is in our neighborhood and report any thing the least bit suspicious, and we do, that is why this HOOD is still fairly safe.

THAT HAD HAPPENED ALL OVER THE CITY. I REMEMBER STOPPING AT SACRED HEART A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN FATHER PAUL WAS STILL THERE. I ALWAYS GO INTO THE CHURCH WHEN I GET THECHACE. THE DOOR WAS LOCKED. THEY LOCKED IT BECAUSE SOMEONE HAD BROKEN INTO THE CONVENT AND THEY HAD TO MOVE THE NUNS.
WHEN WE WERE GROWING UP THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN BECAUSE NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU WERE, YOU ALWAYS RESPECTED THE PRIESTS, NUNS, POLICE AND THE TEACHERS.

Message: Harry : Since we moved down the shore a little over 6 years ago, I've been back more than several times, stopping at Frankie's sub shop on Union, Johnny's Market and attending funeral services at Yasik's with the Masses at St. Hedwig's. Each time I would drive down Jackson and didn't like what I saw. Even when I parked between Yasik's and St. Hedwig's, I would be looking over my shoulder, walking between the two. I feel sorry for those who can't afford to move out. One of my old buddy's mother still lives on Chestnut between Van Buren and Jackson.

I guess you have not been in that area over the last ten years. There is not a safe place to park your car or walk to and from it. My father-in-law, Sig, was president for a long time. His son Tom is the past president. Tom said that they are looking for a place to relocate and had their sights on a building near Boxwood Road, but someone else bought it.

Message: It would be a shame if Pulaski Legion were to close down. So many things went on there. Band, Boy Scouts, the Club downstairs, parties, wedding receptions. I'll bet half of the weddings I ever went to were there, the other half at St. Stan's on the East side. The Niedbalski family lived upstairs. The entrance was from the porch on Jackson. Jack's ( Nibbles) dad, worked in the Club downstairs.

We think his name was Robert Delaney, but just came across the name Leavey. the story goes that he owned a beauty shop named Robert's in Wilmington. He died in Mar 1976 in Wilmington, but can not seem to find him anywhere. Robert possibly had a twin, not sure if it was a boy or girl. Can anyone give me any direction as to where I may possibly search for information. Thanks

Message: I remember Patsy's Sub Shop so well. My mother, "Tommy" Peoples, first brought me to his shop back in the early 50's. Ann, your Dad made the best. He was the one who first put sweet relish on one of my subs. I have never wanted them any other way since then. Though Penny Hill had good subs, Patsy's was my favorite place. The ambience, smell, cleanliness, plus your Dad's smiling face and banter, made a trip all the way into Wilmington worth every minute, until I could sink my teeth into one of his masterpieces. No hot peppers for me tho'...

Message: To Jerry T Thanks for your question. Sub prices during the fifties were thirty cents for small roll and seventy cents for the large crispy roll. The special with additional ham was five and ten cents more. During the fourties the price was twenty five and fifty cents. During a discussion with my older brothers they claim they were ten and twenty cents during the thirties Hard to believe! Dad had a wonderful way with people and we all loved him. So glad that you remembered the old shop What wonderful memories!
