Message: Jerry T., The Pool Hall at Chestnut & Jackson Streets
was Emory's Pool Hall. Old man Emory, as we called him only had one arm but could shoot a hell of a game
and also never turned down a wager of any kind.He had a monkey in the Pool Hall He called Cue ball. Every once in a while we would(as kids)be able to sneak in the side door on Jackson St. and unhook the monkey's chain and run like hell because the damn thing was known to bite. Old man Emory would be hours sometimes trying to coax the Monkey out of trees on Jackson St. with bananas. Myself and John Bunkowski who lived on the other corner and Ontek Cominski from Read St. were usually the culprits.

I also remember Willie Mosconi's Golden Cue in the Price's corner area, just up from Steve's Tavern and on the same side of the road. I'm sure there were a lot more. A co-worker sometime back, Bob Cherico, managed it.

Message: CWP: Noticed that you were in the Air Force and they have a base in Maine or maybe you just like to hunt bears? Love it there in the summers. Re: E. 4th St - As a kid in the late forties I used to take my shoebox up and down 4th Street to gain a few dollars. Shined a lot of servicemen's shoes as well as local tavern patrons. One of my favorite spots was the Wilmington Sportsman's Club on the second floor a top Kramedas Grocery on W. 4th. The Tribuani Brothers ran the place and they permitted me to shine the patrons shoes and I made out pretty well.
They even inroduced me to Patti Page (the singing rage). They also opened up another tavern on 4th between Market and King but I graduated from the shoe shine business by that time and became a caddy where I had the pleasure on a few occasions
to caddy for the great Ed "Porky" Oliver. Wilmington was a vibrant city back in the day.

Message: I forgot to give credit to the local paper for the information. The information on Mary C. I. Williams is from a series on Delaware schools that the Journal Every-Evening ran in 1957. It was the 27th in the weekly series. Some of the information was provided for the article by Elizabeth Schulz. Found the clipping at the Delaware Archives. Anyone remember when the school was demolished? The same folder had an article on the dedication of Conrad High School (1935?). The dedication ceremonies were conducted by Masonic organizations. Mr. Conrad was an active Masonic member. Try that today.

Message: Bill : thanks for the info. about Mary C. I. Williams. One of my cousins went there, in the late 40's /early 50's. Especially helpful was finding out the #, 10, of the P.S. school on Elm and Adams. I lived 1 block away from it and used to play in front of and on the side of it, always wondering what it was like when it was a school, its age etc. I'm quite interested in the history of the P.S. schools in Wilmington. Are you able to divulge your source(s) ?

Message: Mary C. I. Williams was Mary Catherine Irene Williams. She was born in Wilmington in about 1852 and became a teacher in 1871. She rose quickly to become the principal of No. 10 school, then at Elm and Adams. Two years later, she went to No. 9 school, 8th and Wollaston, to start the Wilmington Training School for Teachers. By 1897, she was the assistant suprerintendent of the Wilmington schools. She died in 1908 at her home at 2d & Washington streets. When it opened in September of 1932, it was the only school at the time named for a local educator. The first four principals of the school through 1957 were Miss Ellen Samworth, Miss Elizabeth Schulz, Miss M. Grage Riggin and Miss Eleanor Kane. Someone out there probably remembers several of the principals. Misses Samworth and Schulz were trained at the Wilmington Training School.

Message: I remember the Park Police very well. One gave me a ticket for a loud muffler. I told him I would go and have it fixed right away and return if I didn't get a ticket (funds were short) He made me do both and still gave me the ticket. Talk about condescending. I'm smart enough that he wouldn't have gotten away with that today. Nothing against the police or the law but he was a real jerk. Very similar to the original County cops. Real police wannabes.

Message: I remember a Park Guard who was very old at the time (back in the 50's/60's). We called him John Law. I don't know if this was his real name or not - seems kinda unusual for a policeman's name. He was pretty tough on us kids who were playing football in Bancroft Parkway - had a real condescending attitude. I remember they had a little police station next to Baynard Stadium and, I think they had one inside of Canby Pool.

Message: DOLORES, or anyone else from St. Hedwig's : do you remember the Catholic orphanage in Ogletown ? The Polish people called it " Ochrunka(sp.), meaning Orphanage, I think. I can't remember if the orphanage belonged directly to the Diocese of Wilmington or was run specifically by St. Hedwig's ? I know that there were Felician nuns there, as there were in St. Hedwig's.

I remember a school bus bringing the " orphans " to St. Hedwig's grade school. I had 2 or 3 in my class.

The Orphanage used to have annual picnics in the summertime. I fondly remember them in the 50's and 60's. In those days it was a pleasant ride through the countryside to the picnic, often seeing a train riding alongside the road to the picnic. There was a wooded area behind the orphanage where we used to climb trees and pick crabapples. The last time I went by, some years ago, there was a housing development there.

One of my brothers, either Fred or John, spent a week or two at this orphanage as a " vacation " during the summers.

One summer, while strolling through the picnic grounds, I remember hearing the song, " In the good old summertime " being played on the radio, and the association has remained ever since.

Message: My Dad, John J. Tomczyk Sr., worked in Wilmington leather shops for over 40 tears. He worked at the one on Front and Adams and then went out on disabilty from Allied Kid on 11th and Walnut Sts. His nickname was " Burlap ", from wearing burlap pants to work ( must have been itchy ), in his early days. Wondering if there is anyone younger out there ( Dad was born in 1913 ), who remembers him ? He sometimes ate lunch at the Knotty Pine restaurant, across from Allied Kid. There was an article in the News Journal, some years back about the Knotty Pine. I wonder if it is still there ?
