Message: I, also, remember the Easter egg hunts at Rockford Park. We took our kids there, once, in the 70's. There used to be a crooked tree to the right, just before you got to the road that went around the Tower. It leaned over at a weird angle. They had one of the eggs hidden in that tree. I wonder if that tree is still there.

George again. I know Dick Maguigan pretty well. I used to see him on the beach in Cape Henlopen State Park, but not for a while.
Around the corner from Mrs. Purnell on Maryland Avenue lived the McDermotts and the Doughertys. Do you remember them?
Also I have a BrownTown trivia question for you and anyone else on here. What was the name of Johnny's store before it was Johnny's?
Take Care

Message: While looking for something else, I ran across the obituary [EJ Mon Oct 19 p.10] of A. Jos. DeFiore, who died at age 69, in October 1964. He was born in Naples, Italy, arrived in Philadelphia in 1907 and graduated from Temple. He went into managing movie houses. Once in Wilmington, he managed the Broadway theater on W. 4th street. That was a new one to me. Out of the era and not on the movie house list. Later he owned and operated the Park theater.

Message: Maureen - I certainly remember the riots but we lived on the other side of town. Our only 'event' was the protection of National Guard troops at the corners along Market Street. I remember hearing kids walking home from school talking about which store windows they were going to break out after the troops stopped partroling the streets. They said what items they had their eye on to steal. It was then we realized that our City had been taken over and decided to get out of town at the first opportunity.

Message: :-) Hi Sharon, I work in Wilmington at East Lynn Dress shop on Market St it was located in the Opera house, which is now The Grand Opera House, it is beautiful, hope you have had a chance to catch a play, concert, or Ballet there. Swan Lake is playing tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

I work at the shop in the late 60's age 18 and during the 1st. day of the 1968 riots we had to leave by way of Market street to 4th st. pass all the burning houses, the smell of fire was frightening and you could hear shots fired, we had to lay down on the floor of the car and it took us a really long time up 4th. to get out of the city, traffic was at a stand still, it was unbelievable. I worked with Karen Quinn and her brother drove us girls home. What a brave thing he did. I can't remember his name, but forever thankful to him. Anyone know the Quinn family from Christ Our King parish, there were at least 16 kids in this nice family.

Oh, I think the Burger King you were asking about was on Market St. a couple of doors up from East Lynn. between 9th and 8th.

Ray Jubb, In the archives I saw the mention of Tom Gears. I new Tom well he lived a door away from us in Canby Pk. My mother was a switchboard operator for the police & fire. During the 68 riots she would work late & with the curfew in effect the police would bring her home. They would get out of the sguad car with rifles drawn untill she was safely in the house. Very sad & scarry time for the city of Wilm. Canby Pk had many Wilm Police and Fire employees due to the residency requirements.

He looked at three in the Trolley Square neighborhood, but they were all too rich for his pocketbook. He DID take a place in Happy Valley, however. The outdoor shots made by HGTV made both of these neighborhoods look pretty good to my eye. I assume that these areas are still/now relatively tranquil re: crime these days, or was I being deceived?

Message: Mike O, I really don't know, but thought the car belonged to Dick. There is a possibility that he may have had to sell it. After being in business with a friend from high school, for a few years, the story goes, he found the partner was taking money from the business. One side did mechanical work the other body work. The split may have cost Dick money he didn't have at the time and possibly he sold the car at that time to raise money to keep the business afloat. This is all speculation and I really don't know one way or the other, but I was to have my car painted there, and it fell through because of the split. I only heard the one side, and even that was second hand. It was my impression however that initially the car was his and he raced it. After that he got into motorcycles and four wheelers. I remember the sons had them when they were just barely able to walk. They were motorheads from the time they were old enough to talk.

Message: Carlo, I see you hung out at the pool hall at 6th and Lincoln. My Mom and her Brother lived above the store on the corner there for a short period of time. She always spoke very highly of the guys who hung out there. She described them as young gentlemen who were always ready to assist her, and my Uncle at the drop of a hat, with groceries (hauling them up the stairs) or whatever was needed. In the many times I visited, I never saw any of you to thank you, I'd like to do that now, although it is about 40 years late. As they say, better late than never. Both my Mom, and my Uncle, have long since passed but I've always remembered the kind words she had to say about the guys who used to play pool there. Thank you very much for the help you and your friends gave them, Wayne

Message: Connie, The Gail that everyone is talking about, could she be the one who married Dick Spence? He had an auto repair business up on Namans Road, and their house was next door. In the early sixties he drag raced, with a Corvette called Tomato Can. He did pretty well and may have been a National contender. He died in an airplane accident a few years ago. She was a friend of my in-laws, in the Rockford area - the Callahans. I know she still has breakfast with one of the Rubincam girls (also of Rockford) once a month. Her husband (Rubincams') Bob Shum, was killed about a year ago going to church (St. Matthew's) and crossing Maryland Ave in Woodcrest. He was hit by a hit and run driver who was drag racing at the time. They never were able to charge the driver, although they know who he is.

Message: Mike O : My brother John was in the Air National Guard during the '68 riots. I remember him saying that he was lucky and didn't have to go into Wilmington. He stayed back at the airport, I think, passing out supplies and ammo, and whatever duties they had for him.

Message: When asked if I was in the service, I would say in the Air Guard in the battle of Wilmington in 1968.
Housed for two weeks in the Wilmington Armory. During the day at Buana Vista and Race St. in a Del Power sub-station all brick with no windows and at night playing baskeball in the armory. The women from St Anthony's made us many home made meals,
thus saving us from sea rations everynight.

Message: Thanks, Mike O. Even though I was a parishioner of St. Hedwig's, I used to go to Our Lady of Mercy for the earliest Sunday Mass on some summer mornings. There were nice breezes coming in through their open windows. Another summer choice was St. Paul's below the upstairs Church for 12:00 p.m. Masses(air conditioned). This was back in the early to mid 60's.
