Message: Gary, I recall Lou Hinkle who played football for Happy Valley. He was older than I, we kids went to the games. His Dad I believe was a Park Guard. I remember he had a sister Phyllis. My Dad had an old picture of the Brandywine Hawks, an earlier football team from Happy Valley. We have to keep the chit chat off the forum.

Message: Does anyone else remember the old curtain stretchers? They were made of a light wood frame with nails sticking out all over it. The wet curtains were hooked onto the nails to dry so they wouldn't shrink or dry wrinkled. Curtains that had straight edges when new became curtains with scalloped edges after just one wash. The nails were pretty mean to the hands, too.

To answer your question about your parents gas station, The Webmaster has a photo, on page 2 of Old Wilmington before 1975, in front of the A&P,down the street from the Chuck wagon. It is now the parking lot of Goodwill thrift store. The garage is now Quality Automotive. Maybe the Webmaster will respond.

Message: I was hoping someone out there may be able to help me. My grandfather just passed away and he and my grandmother were born and raised in Wilmington before moving downstate. My grandfather used to own and operate Stockman's Foreign Car Repair, a repair shop and gas station, on Kirkwood Highway near the Chuck Wagon. I was hoping someone may have a photo that has his business in it. I'd like to find it for my grandmother and aunts/uncles along with some other old photos I've got.

Message: Recalling a close knit neighborhood : we lived at 302 S. Jackson St. in Hedgeville. My grandparents' store was next door at 300 S. Jackson. They lived in the house behind the store at 927 Elm. A great aunt, an aunt and her two daughters(my cousins) lived 2 houses down at 306 S. Jackson. One of her daughters dated and married a guy 4 houses down on Jackson. Her other daughter dated and married a guy around the corner and 4 houses down on Elm St. My best buddy, still to this day, lived directly across the street at 303 S. Jackson. Had cousins who lived on Linden about 2 blocks away, cousins on Linden and Van Buren, about 3 blocks away and 2 different sets of cousins on Van Buren about 4 blocks away(one of which had the family grocery store).

My mother's whole life, almost, was within a 3 block radius of where she was born on Maple St., except for the latter years of her life on S. Broom and St. Elizabeth Sts. (about 5-6 blocks away), which comprised her childhood, school and church(all the sacraments, includiing marriage), her wedding reception at Modjiewska Hall and finally the funeral home on Maple and Van Buren, a half block up from where she was born and her final Mass at St. Hedwig's 2 blocks away.

Besides the family there was a host of good friends and neighbors. And that's the way is was, back then.
I'm sure that there are many other similar type stories and memories.

Message: During the war our A & P offered empty corrugated boxes for customers to carry their groceries home in as they didn't provide paper bags because of the war effort. Someone was always haveing a paper drive. I don't know what they did with the papers or how that helped the war effort unless it freed something up that was useful.

Message: I remember those old newstands as well. One that sticks out in my mind is one which I mentioned before, on S. Jackson and Maryland Ave. in Hedgeville. I think it was a bookie joint as well. My grandfather's store(Szat's/Shotz) on Jackson and Elm Sts. sold 2-3 Polish publications, one of which was the " Gwiazda " (Star) . Checking with my oldest brother Alfred to see if he remembers the others.

One thing which I remember about the A&P down the street on Jackson and Linden Sts. is that they used to leave out front their used wooden orange crates/boxes if anyone needed them. I used to keep my box turtles in them, and use the wood for assorted projects. Also used to like the smell of the wood.

Message: I remember in the '40s and 50s the shop across the street had a news stand out front. About 3 or 4 different types of newspapers were stored there, and dustomers would pick up their paper and go inside the shop and pay for it.

Also, we walked to the A & P store and left our wagon at the side of the store with numerous other wagons and carts. As far as I remember, no one ever had their vehicle stolen.

The cover picture is a group of kids standing around a concrete wading pool and spray setup at the corner of 8th & Duncan at Brown Park. It's dated 1949. The picture is clear enough to maybe pick out some faces.
