Message: Ralph, Thanks for playing at the Memorial day ceremony. :-) I go to the Veterans cemetery on Memorial Day every year, this year it was so great, best turn out ever! My dad past away Oct. 22 2008 and he is buried there. Dave J. Kelley is a World War 2 Marine Vet. good friend of Doug McClure, who also past away 2009 they were always in the Parades. Doug would drive my dad in the Marine red van and down to the Memorial day dedication at the bridge in the morning and over to the Vet's cemetery in the afternoon for the ceremony. Miss them both :-(

Yes, I do have some. The program I used back then was called WWWBOARD. Some of you might remember that it was a "Threaded" messaging system. To separate the messages would be something I don't want to attack right now. There were only less than 25 messages where posters could answer each other and it was open to scams.

Refresh my memory. As a small kid growing up on S. Jackson St. in the 1950's (I'm 63 now), I remember your company, but can't remember if you were a bottler or a distributor or both. Did you have all the flavors of sodas ? How about the lime sodas, which were colored green ?

Didn't you niece Jeannie have a younger brother ?

Message: 12 years! Imagine what's occurred for everyone in that time span and how the world has changed since then. Twelve years is the time it took for most of us to go from the beginning of 1st grade until we graduated from high school! It's longer than it's been since 911 and longer than the 2nd Bush and Obama presidencies combined. Twelve years ago my two sons were barely teenagers; now they're employed as scientists and my youngest son, who was only 11 then, is engaged to be married. I'd bet that everyone who reads this column have experienced huge changes in their lives, too. I remember that when I first found this website I discovered that one of the early posts here was made by my father, Lewis Stat; 12 years ago my Dad was only 82 years old, now he's 94. When my father shared some of his early memories of Wilmington on this website 12 years ago he signed his posting: "Looking Forward, LS." Today, I'll sign similarly, so that if I look back 12 years from now--when I'm 80 years-old--that "look over my shoulder" may give me a glimpse of what I was thinking on this lovely summer morning on South Pender Island in British Columbia. Harry, please add my thanks to the others who have thanked you for providing us with this forum through which we share fond memories of our childhoods and our lives in Wilmington. Good luck and all best wishes for the next 12 years. "Looking Forward, D.K.S."

Message: When I was in the Boy Scouts, Troop # 7, at Pulaski Legion, a couple of us went to the Fire Station on 2nd and Jackson Sts., to get tested for our 'Safety' merit badge by a Fireman. I forget his name now. I'll have to see if I can find the card he signed off, on. One of the Dobrzynski brothers from Elm St. was a Fireman there, but it wasn't him. Neat inside the station. We got a tour, but weren't allowed to go down the pole. It became, and I think it is still, the Emmanuel Meal Center for the poor and homeless.

Dupont and Gilpin Avenue which will replace the old 1893 firehouse. It is a long way from completion, as they had to raze a building to make room for the new firehouse. They are still working on the basement, no new structure up as of yet.

Message: There was something special about eating an Italian Water Ice, especially when the "dog days" of August baked the Wilmington sidewalks. The tiny pieces of lemon peel that we found scattered throughout the ice seemed like little treasures and the lemon flavored ice was good to the very last drop! I never had a snow cone that could compare with one of those Italian ices. I remember buying them at a stand on the east side of Union Street, somewhere between 5th and 6th Streets, I believe.

Message: Swifty- At first it was a bit of a challenge to climb the ropes at P.S. Within a short time, however, many of us could clamber up using only our hands; when we reached the top we would wrap our legs and feet around the rope and descend very fast, in great leaps and bounds, pausing only once or twice on the way down to slow our descent. You could only accomplish this if you were wearing gym shoes, otherwise you'd burn up your feet. I think many of us were inspired by photos from WWII that showed SEABEES or Marines climbing up or down rope nets on the sides of ships.

Message: I was wondering....
I do a lot of genealogy research and have only limited info on my mom's family and her siblings. I was wondering if anyone here may have gone to school with any of the DeLacy kids? My mom Marie, graduated from PS DuPont class of 1940 (I think). She had an older brother Bill, younger siblings Anne, Jimmy, "Jean" aka Regina, and Eddie. If any of you may have gone to school with any of them I'd love to hear from you about any memories you might have of them. What were they like in school? Who were their friends? Were they into sports or extra curricular activities? Sadly all the DeLacy's have passed on so any info you could share would be a treasure to us. Mom worked at Katie's Restaurant, Uncle Bill worked for DuPont as did Anne. Jim worked for the Electric Hose and later the City of Wilmington and to be honest I don't remember hearing where Eddie worked. Trying to learn what we can about those I wish we knew better when we had the chance. Any help would be appreciated, feel free to email me direct. Thank you.

Message: One of the more memorable class trips that we took at Harlan School was to a fire hall. Of course, none of us knew which fire hall we were visiting; probably one that was located near the school. I remember exploring the building with the other kids in our class and seeing the sleeping area on the 2nd floor of the hall where the firemen slept. It seemed like some sort of "bunk house," and of course it was. Most memorable of all was the fire pole which all of us boys wanted to slide down. I don't think we were allowed. Within a couple of years, though, Nat Bender and Jake Warner gave us access to a high rope in the gym at P.S. which sort of satisfied our urge to slide down the fire pole.

Even if he didn't walk to Harlan, it's improbable that he was the same man who sold fudge after school let out at the Lore; there just wouldn't have been enough time; even with the new physics, someone can't be in two places at the same time. Maybe it was a franchise, though; perhaps a couple of cousins.

One day boys were buying funny looking cigarettes for a quarter each. (This is when a pack was about twenty cents.) I went up to him to buy fudge and he angrily yelled at me to go away! Some time later he wasn't coming to sell fudge anymore. I mentioned it to someone and they laughed and said he had been selling drugs and the school found out about it. I assume he was arrested.

Message: Thank you, Maureen. My children are both scientists; unfortunately, my time to tell them stories about my childhood is now quite limited. That being said, however, I am inspired by your enthusiasm to tell my sons my recollections about the man who sold candy on the corner at Harlan school, so I want to thank you for that as well. I was hoping that someone reading this column could add to my recollection and perhaps elaborate on it. No doubt David Cauffman's mother, who worked in the office at Harlan School, had adult knowledge about this man; perhaps there are others. Then again, preserving the childhood memory exactly as it is has merit, too. Either way, I don't think I'll be disappointed. Thanks again, Maureen, for your compliments.

Message: Upon further reflection (re: the man who sold candied apples and fudge at 36th and Jefferson), I can honestly say that it was the man's quiet dignity that impressed itself on the small boy's memory. There was a kindness in his gaze and demeanor that, from my perspective now, I can only ascribe to the man's life experience which had brought him--in what I imagine may have been his twilight years--to the flag-poled corner of our elementary school. The man must have known, as we children fled home in all directions, that the little taste of sweetness that he had so affordably sold to us, would linger in our memory, long after the sound of his departing footsteps had faded from the sidewalk of our schoolyard.......

Message: The corner at 36th and Jefferson was where the flag pole was located at Harlan School. In the early 1950's, an older gentleman, who seemed as if he had come to Wilmington from somewhere in Europe, set up a small folding table there, from which he sold candied apples and chocolate fudge to the children, after school let out. He was a tall, thin, dignified man who often wore an overcoat with a scarf and a hat. I remember him standing there quietly with a dozen or so candied apples with their little sticks poking out from their wax paper wrappings, along with a meager array of small squares of homemade fudge carefully set out on his table. Later (possibly around 1954), school officials disallowed the man's enterprise and I never saw him again. I've always wondered who that man was, how he came to be in Wilmington and what became of him. So if I was asked to nominate a Wilmington street corner that was in some way special for "standin," it would have to be the corner of Harlan School at 36th and Jefferson, because of the quiet man who once stood there after school, where he sold his apples and fudge for a very few nickles and dimes and impressed a sweet memory on one little boy.

Message: We always went to the free mornings at Price's Run Pool. Some mornings were so cool we wore a sweater to walk to the pool, then stayed under the water as much as possible to avoid the cool air. But there was no way to avoid that cold shower we had to run through to get from the changing room to the pool.

Message: Speaking of corners, anyone out there remember the guys standing on the corner in front of Woolworths @ 9th & Market, at lunch time, watching the girls back in the early 60's? It was always very windy and back then we wore full skirts that we had to hold down when crossing the street.

Message: I read in today's New York Times that Winslow, Arizona is capitalizing on a line in an Eagles song about "standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona". Apparently, a little park has been built across the street from the supposed corner in the song, which has been plaqued with a historical marker; now tourists are congregating there and the whole enterprise is generating close to a half million $'s a year for the town's businesses. People actually go to Winslow to stand on the corner! In most cities in the U.S., including our very own Wilmington, Delaware, standing on a corner will get you arrested (for loitering) or, if you wait long enough, shot. The only people in Wilmington who capitalize on people standing on a corner are those who are employed in law enforcement and sign painters who are paid for making signs that read "NO LOITERING". Maybe it's just bad luck for us that the Eagles didn't write a song about "standin' on a corner in Wilmington, Delaware." If The Eagles had written a song about Wilmington, can you imagine which corner it might have been?.......

Message: Moved into a great Wilmington neighborhood in 1935 and left around 1957. There were people that had their roots from other countries, including Irish, German, Polish and English and Jewish. I recall in the 30's an oriental family, never knew if they were Chinese or Japanese. There were two colored families that lived just two houses away from ours. What a great neighborhood to grow up in. Our neighborhood was small. There was even a Greek family that lived there. This was known as Happy Valley a great place to live.

Message: Interesting - June 4, “1954 With models on the Kirkwood Highway, Brookside homes in Newark were advertised. The Coronet model mortgage was $58.81 per month while the twin bath El Dorado was $74.02 per month.”
“Average Annual Salary: $4,700 Minimum Wage: 75 cents per hour 1954”

When the media reports how little one earns in other countries, then need to also say how much they pay for everything.
