Bancroft mill closed in 1961, but I think the mill store stayed open for a few years after that. I don!t think the quality of material was as good then, as when the mill was open. Plus, the ladies that worked there knew the merchandise.Try to find that in stores today!

My Mom used to shop for dress-making material there in the late 1940s and I would play outside in a little run-off stream that ran down beside the mill (yes!--there was a time when parents let their kids play outside while they were inside shopping). I'm sure it's long gone, but I wish I knew exactly where it was. Any help appreciated!

I’ve also found another reference for your father. Do you have a broadband internet connection I can electronically send it to you, it’s not a picture. If you don’t or don’t know I can send you a CD of it through the mail.
I am getting the picture printed and will send it to you shortly.
My grandfather worked for Wilmington and Philadelphia Traction Company and maybe Delaware Coach Company. My father and brother both worked for Delaware Coach Company and DART. I have worked for DAST and Dart the First State.
Your father most likely knew my grandfather and father.
If you have any old pictures of buses around Wilmington I would be interested.
You should have your picture in 2 weeks or less.
I just saw your posting and will email as you request, allow about two weeks. Also let me know when you received the picture via the mail.

Message: Hello, my name is Chandelle, I graduated from WHS in 95. I wanted to tell you all of a few things. One being that we have been in the process of planning a First Annual All Class Reunion Picnic to be held on Aug 13th at the Grandell Field. We are still working out some of the details. Second I would like to give you the link: www.friendsofwilmingtonhigh.org to the website we have been working on for WHS, it is a work in progress right now, but any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Last but not least if any of you have Facebook we have created a group on their for all classes of WHS, here is the link for that: WHS.REDDEVILS@groups.facebook.com. We are really trying to connect all classes of WHS and obtain as much information as we can about WHS so we can inform the community about what it was like going to school there. If you have any pictures or information please let us know. We would greatly appreciate any and all help.

Thank you,
Chandelle Phibbs

Message: Al, You are correct, there were contributions by thousands to the success of the space shuttle. The general public has been more interested in Hollywood "artists" than in the efforts of people who actually create something. They forget that without the space programs, we would not have the computers we all enjoy, and some people use to listen to those "artists"!

Message: BOB VEAZEY: Interesting story about the model you built and AAE's involvement in the Shuttle program. I too played a small part as did many. While at Martin Marietta I performed non-destructive testing on Carbon Composites used on the shuttle. Your story reminded me of how good the space race was for Wilmington's economy as well as for that of the entire nation. It was one of the few times when our prosperity was not due to our waging war! Many jobs were created both in aerospace and non-aerospace. In those days great efforts were made to retain "Brain Pools" but now our government seems content to just throw them away. The loss of 10,000 NASA jobs is inexcusable but small compared to the trickle down job losses it will cause in related industries. Thanks for your contribution!

Message: Old Brandywine Village, Inc. is preserving remaining structures which were part of the settlement on the north bank of the Brandywine which were built around the 18th century.
The house parallel to 18th Street was the “Lea-Derickson house.
Joseph Tatnall developed Brandywine Village into an important milling center. Edward Tatnall built his house which is now the rear wing of the house at 1807 Market Street. Other houses were built at 1801, 1803, and 1807 Market in later years by Tatnalls.
I recall, as a very young child (1940s) a row of clapboard row houses across the street from those stone houses. They were vacant and board up. I later remember them being gone.
Across the street from the Richardsons Variety Store near 19th and Market was an old building with store front windows. In one small windowed area was an original section of the log building which was there before. A friend’s relative lived in the ’newer’ building and one would walk through a hall a distance to the left, then a long distance back, then up another narrow hall to the apartment. I believe that building is gone by now.

Message: Ref. the last Shuttle mission, most Wilmingtonians are probably unaware of the role All American Engineering played in that program. AAE developed an emergency runway net barrier to arrest the shuttle in the event of a pre-orbit or re-entry emergency that prevented a landing at a normal location. Up to 6 such systems were deployed on each launch. I ran a part time model building business and made the model (about 12 ft. wingspan) that was catapulted into a scale net. The model was delivered to Houston at the completion of the tests. A small contribution, but a contribution never the less.

Message: I remember attending a whole lot of Sallies football games in the 50's, including vs. Howard H.S.. I was the only kid in the neighborhood who didn't attend Sallies but went along to the games for the fun. They were great games, especially when they would beat the "best of Philadelphia." We used to sing, "While our loyal faculty lies drunk on the bar room floor..." and that would always bring black stares from the many priests surrounding us. The other guys from my corner would pay for it later!

We were on the shoulder across from the airport chain link fence. We urged our Dad to go to where the blimp was coming down, but the car did not start. I can't recall if the starter kicked over. There were two cars that stopped running on the road and another on the shoulder with the hood raised just like our car. These cars all got moving after just a few minutes. Never got to the blimp as Dad was afraid his car might stop again. I remember our father thought the Army and the Du Pont may have been working on a special project. Never knew if this was an incident or coincident.

Message: I remember riding the bus by myself and going to the movies downtown. I was 7 (almost 8) when the "Creature from the black lagoon" came out in early 1954. I remember going to see it - by myself! It was nice as kids having the freedom to go places and feel completely safe. When my grandchildren are around I never let them out of my site.

Message: Ralph, I think the V. N. War veterans were treated with such disrespect, it was a terrible time for them coming home, it was so sad. It was my generation that fought this war, lost two close friends from high school and so many friends that fought in V. N. that were treated so badly. I know they are finally getting recognition for their brave service, but why did it take so long :-( ? I pray this never happens again to our heroes. Thank God for our Vets and all those who are still serving for our country, because without them we would not be celebrating July 4! God bless America, hope all had a great July 4th!!! :-)

The person in charge of the Vet. Cemetery is a woman, not that it matters, since this is an insult to all especially our military.
There was a very well attended and protest this week-end. Here's a link from the Houston Chronicle describing what is going on. God Bless America!!!

Message: Pat,
I am so very glad that you responded to my message. I thought you had said you knew Jeannie as well and had forgotten about your mothers connection to Uncle Jim. The store was owned by my great grandfather Joseph Walsh and his wife Mary. I have heard from several people what a kind person she was, mom used to talk of having Pepsi and pretzels with her grandma late at night after the store closed. My dad actually worked for the Electric Hose as well, his name was Clifford Corey, Jim DeLacy worked there and later went on to work for the City of Wilmington. We've been in touch with Jean's children recently and are trying to fill them in on some family data. Your cousins name sounds very familiar to me, mom must have mentioned her over the years. These days we are so excited when we can find anyone who remembers the good old days and is still alive to tell about it. How I wish I'd asked more when I had the chance to do so. Mom worked for Katie's restaurant at Sixth & Scotts Sts. for 29 years until the Fugilino's sold the place.

I know somewhere I have a handful of pics mom had and seems to me there was one of Mrs. Mackey with a boy I don't know why but I thought I had it marked Mrs. Mackey and Ronnie, did Veronica ever go by Ronnie? I know the picture is not of her but thought maybe I lost something in the translation of marking the picture.

We have scraps of mom's yearbook from PS, the mice got to it when it was in storage but we were able to salvage her picture and comment. I loved that so many of the students signed the books. Wish we had the same for the other DeLacy kids alas we do not.

I believe Jean went on to live with my folks early when my brother was just a baby, not sure if that was right out of high school or under circumstances. I think their grandparents had died just before that time also.

If anyone has any other recollections of the DeLacy family or of the Corey's from E. 24th Street I'd sure love to hear about, any of the old gang from Electric Hose and Rubber or Katie's too. Grandpop Walsh's store was at 22nd and Market St. I'd love to hear about he and Grandma also. It's amazing what those old tales mean to you, it's a chance to touch the past.

Message: Ruth, I do remember our earlier messages about your mother. I did not go to school with any of the DeLacy's; however, I do remember your mother, Marie, and her siblings, Jimmy, Jeannie and Eddie. My cousin, Veronica Mackey, went to St. Pat's with your mother through the 3rd grade. Veronica is 88 now and remembers your mother. My mother, Catherine Stillwell, worked with Jimmy at the Electric Hose in the 40's and 50's. I remember them all from the neighborhood and Welch's store. I called Veronica and she says she also remembers going to PS with your mother but couldn't remember who Marie married. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but maybe this will trigger some memories from some of the other "Old Wilmingtonians" who may have attended those schools in the 30'a dnf 40's. I might also add that they were a very nice family as were the Welch's. Many an extra piece of penny candy Mrs. Welch slipped into my little bag!

My friends Ralph Pryor, Ray Jubb and Joe Miller could tell them quite a bit.
I am up in Wilmington for a little while visiting my kids and I went out to Lunch with my cousin Richard Serpe of Serpe's Bakery.
If you get a chance listen to Colin on WDEL.

Message: May I direct this to Pat LeVan please. Since it looks like we can't email directly anymore I was wondering if you might be able to answer some questions for me. I know you and I communicated some years back about my mom Marie (DeLacy) Corey, pretty sure you mentioned knowing the DeLacy kids.

I was wondering which of the kids you went to school with? Sadly all the DeLacy kids have passed on now so we're sort of out of people to ask about them.

My sister in law & I got discussing how mom met dad recently and we knew he was in the navy at the time, she was on a double date with her cousin (who was dating dad) but the curiosity of just where that all occurred had us stumped. This is just one curiosity among some others we could use some insights. Any info would be appreciated.
