Message: Jim Rambo. Billy Jarrell was one of my favorite people.
He was just flat out one of the nicest guy's I have ever met. He used to stay at my place at the Beach when we had our Defiance Tournaments. I remember all too well the last time he went down to play, he wound up staying back at the house too weak to play
but game enough to go down with us and try. Bub Querey being the good guy that he is elected to forgo the Tournament and stay with him, it was sad.

Fire Department. The Club then moved to the South

Location: Gle ndale, AZ
Old Neighborhood(s): Elsmere
Schools Att'd: Oak Grove, Conrad, U of D
Employers: Honeywell (retired)
Message: I grew up on Forest Ave in Elsmere where my parents lived in the same house for over sixty years. I lived in Indianapolis and Ashland, Kentucky while in the Army before returning to Delaware (Claymont) for one year before my employment took me to Bucks County, PA for the next 26 years. In '92 I reluctantly accepted a company transfer to Arizona, quickly learned to love the Southwest, and retired here in '02. I always would have preferred to stay in Delaware but have always been happy with where I ended up. Now that I travel through much of the US to new places I've never been to I sometimes wish I had been more adverturesome about living in new and different places. Time changes both places and people.

Schools Att'd: St. Hedwig's, Archmere, U. of D.
Employers: U.S. Army, State of Dela.(retired)
Message: Aside from living in Wilmington, the Wilmington area and down here at the shore, I spent 20 months with the Army in South Korea from 9/69 to 5/71. Most of my off duty time was spent off base, sightseeing and enjoying the people, the culture and the food. Fascinating country, yet I yearned for good old Wilmington, especially in the beginning of my tour. We went back to re-visit in 1989, and how things had changed, especially with respect to modernization and construction. What was once a small dirt road which ran parallel to my base, and took you in one direction to the 4077th M.A.S.H., had become a major highway. I'm sure it has changed much since.

When I say I have to laugh, I don't mean that to be sarcastic it's just funny how to guy's from the same City went different way's with different life styles.

Message: My best memories are of playing baseball from '54 to '60. Seems like we played at fields all over the city. Places like Browntown, 2nd and Clayton, Woodlawn Ave., 18th and Van Buren, Conrad HS, Rockford Park, etc, etc. That was before Sallies even had a baseball field. Sallies bussed the team out to Rockford Park for daily practices.
I still remember the best players in the city those days: Billy Olewinski, Bob Tinsman, Rusty Gates, Vinny Scott and Bill McMahon. Boy, did Matchy have a curve ball!!
I never remembered having social/racial problems in any of these neighborhoods. And after thinking long and hard about that, it is clear why. I guess I would get bumped from this forum if I said what has changed. But it definitely is the elephant in the room.
Anybody else remember back when???

Bill

Message: Jim Kelley - found this info. from the Archives of O.W. on 10/17/02 by a member of the Limmina family : 'Charlie's Original Sub Shop' opened in the 1930's at 413 Madison St., and was owned by Rosario(Charlie) and Mary Limmina. It was the first sub shop in Dela. Their son, Yatz, and his son , Tom, were the co-owner's of Yatz's on 7th and Union Sts.

I'm not sure when Yatz's moved from S. Rodney St. in Cleland Heights to Little Italy, but I'm pretty sure I remember still getting subs from the Cleland Heights location in 1972, before I moved out of the neighborhood.

1941 prices at Charlie's Original Sub Shop : 10 cents for a small sub on a 12 " soft roll, 20 cents for a large sub on an 18' hard roll. I thought I remembered that in the 50's the large subs were bigger than the standard 12 '' today.

Today my husband finally got around to doing much needed repairs to the back of the desk and feet. He found a letter opener that reads...Dino's Cafe & Restaurant, 217 W. 9th Street, Wilmington, Del.
Does anyone remember this restaurant and are they still around today?
Also we found a paystub from June 3rd, 1950 for an Amanda O. Hutson who worked for the Diamond State Telephone Company. Ive tried to locate her on line and have not had any luck.

Check it out. The original of the lithograph is at the Hagley Museum. It's a great piece of the 19th Century lithographer's art.

Message: When we were teenagers, Morty Rosenblatt lived with his mother on one side of a duplex on the east side of Washington Street at 33rd, next to the cemetery. His father, who had operated a used car sales lot on Gov. Printz Blvd., passed away when Mort was 13 years-old and like too many other unfortunate children, Mort suffered the hardship of not having a father to encourage and love him through the "fevers" of adolescence. First as a boy and then a young man, Mort took refuge in reading; he also was moved by the songs of Buddy Holley and Hank Williams. When we were a bit older, we'd sometimes drive up to Chester and The Hook to drink beer at Ginsburgs, Molly's, or one or another of the tap rooms that served the workers at Sun Ship where the proprietor would turn a blind eye to the fact that we were not yet 21. So we'd buy a couple of drafts from Harry Ginsburg and kick back in the cool darkness of the tap room where Mort could forget for a moment that he was a boy without a father. I was one of Mort's pals and so I'm happy to see his name in print on the Old Wilmington Website.

Message: According to Wikipedia [ today!s encyclopedia ].

As textile producers left the northeastern United States for the southern states, Bancroft Mills closed in 1961.

The complex was recently owned by Wilmington Piece Dye company which went bankrupt in May 2003. The site was then bought by O'Neill Properties Group, a company specializing in the renovation and revitalization of disused or potentially dangerous parcels of land. Bancroft Mills is scheduled to become a large luxury condominium complex, to be called Rockford Falls. Today the complex stands as a reminder of the significant milling history of the Brandywine Valley.

Message: The question about book stores reminds me of the most memorable store owner that I knew. It was Mort Rosenblatt, a guy from up near Bellevue. He had the book store/ comic book store just west of 5th and Market. It's now a restaurant. Later, when Mort became seriously ill, he opened a store in his Bellevue home. I used to take my son into both locations. Mort had a ton of valuable books and was a real character: great sense of humor and extremely knowledgeable re: first editions etc.
