Employers: U.S. Army, State of Dela.(retired)
Message: I have to agree with Jim Rambo concerning the suburbs, specifically the Brandywine Springs area. I'm surmising that Jim was about 17 years old when his family moved to that location.

When I was that age, it would have been 1965. Although I have very fond memories of my Old Wilmington at that age, it was shortly afterwards that the city began to undergo the drastic changes which led to it's demise. A quiet, peaceful life in that area with the spaciousness, the park, the woods, the water and the adventures that this area offered, would have 'made my day'.

In the late 70's and early 80's, I oftentimes went to Brandywine Springs Park with my family for picnics, barbecues and fun days rollicking through the park, the woods and the old, historic amusement area, down by the 'crick'.

Message: I was born and raised in the city - ie. I am a Native Wilmingtonian. From little up we walked or rode a trolley anywhere we wanted to go. Back then we had no need to leave the city. We didn't know anything about the suburbs except that people in the 'burbs had to drive everywhere they needed to go.

Name: jim rambo
Location: mexico
Old Neighborhood(s): 3rd and Connell
Schools Att'd: bayard/ conrad

Message: We moved to the suburbs in 1957. Why? So I could live next to Brandywine Springs State Park, have my own German Shepherd, camp in the woods next door, ice skate on the pond 100 yards away, have my own bedroom, our own yard, have trees in the yard (all trees on Connell St. were cut down), and build our own pool. The move of hundreds of "mountain people" to Delaware to work for Chrysler hastened our retreat. Did they all own loud motorcycles?! We used a false address for my father, who was still on the Wilmington F.D. It worked out fine.

Message: Ever since I was a child, we went to Wildwood via Buckshutem Road. It's a lot less traffic and lights. Even my kids go that way now. When we came home from Wildwood on August 14th, they kept announcing roads that were closing - right behind us! One of them was Buckshutem. Someone said there were sinkholes. Anyway, parts of Route 49 closed after we had passed, also, around Salem. I believe we got out of town just in time. We rode through a lot of water at some intersections, but made it home safely. I would still use Buckshutem Road. Shirley Hudson Jester
