Message: Dan. The store at 34th & Washington St was called Gassers.
"old man" Gasser owned it and I know one of his sons, Franklin, worked there. He was later killed in a bad auto accident on the Jersey turnpike I believe. We went there frequently and I always got one of their choclate milkshakes, my favorite. The drug store portion was right on the corner and the grocery part next store. It was a landmark there for quite a while. Don't know when it was closed.

Message: Didn't know the Michaels family personally, but knew of them. Their name may have been either Michalewski or Miklajewski, not sure. Once back in the mid 70's, I met the son of the owner of that bakery on Elm and Van Buren. He was at least 10 years older than me. He owned the Jackie-Carol Pastry Shop(named after his two daughters)on Maryland Ave., on the other side of the road from the Charcoal Pit and a little before it, going in the direction of Newport. On the other corner of Elm and Van Buren(same side as the bakery), the Kowalski family had a grocery store, which I remember from the 50's.

Do you remember the candy/ice cream store across from it? Their daughter had a grocery store after the bakery and candy store closed on the corner across from where the bakery was.

I knew the barber shop because my uncle had it for a while, his wife's family lived around the corner. She had a beauty shop in their basement on Connell on the last block north. His son married Helen Buda from the east side and my uncle's daughter married Sam Buccio and they owned the liquor store where the old prison was.

Message: Hey, I loved that comment of Ray's: "Anyone born in a hospital was considered rich." When my mother died in June of this year, I dug out the hospital bill for my birth and stay at the Wilmington General. The week and services totaled about $47.00! A writer friend of mine here in Mexico just wrote something about that. He asked, " Is there anyone left who can tell how beautiful your mother was on the day you were born?" Quite a sentiment to remember.

Message: Pat : Can't help you out with the 9th Ward barbers, but here are 4 from Hedgeville who some might remember. Joe the barber, was on Maryland Ave. between Chandler and Maple Sts.(next to the Colonial Bank). I went to him for 23 years from the time I was 3. Last haicut with him was for my Dad's funeral in 1974. A Polish fellow, but forget his last name now. I remember the cuts as cheap as 50 cents when I was a kid.

Then there was another Polish barber( forgot his name too), on Adams St. between Elm and Linden. He also owned the Dry Goods store, next door on the corner of Adams and Linden. A relative posted several years back with his name. He always put a dime in our bags for Halloween.

Another one was on Connell, between Linden and Elm. I think the last name was Potocki.

My Dad used to go to Ciconte's or Ciconti's on Maryland Ave. between Elm and Linden.

Message: Jim Rambo : Benjamin Sklut's Hide and Fur was about a block or two off Maryland Ave. on Lower Linden St., I believe. I knew of a man who was murdered in that area by a teenager. I think it was between the years 1969 and 1971, because my buddy wrote me about it when I was in the Army. The victim lived in my old neighborhood on Elm St., between Jackson and Porter Sts. with his mother and brother. Poor old soul. Sometimes he didn't comeback with the right change when buying booze for teenagers, and sometimes didn't return at all. I think the latter was the case. The teenager was arrested because he was bragging about it at a party.

I used to think that all excess pollutants would be burned off, leaving only an odor, but that's not the case. In the most recent flare, which came to the attention of TNJ, four pollutants/hazardous chemicals were released. I don't mind the odor when driving by, but wouldn't want it constantly in my back door.

Message: I used to drive down Rte 1 late at night on our way home from work and would occasionally see the huge flame from what ever it was they did once in a while. I knew what it was but others from down Maryland didn't and they were really awed by the sight.

Message: I live close to Delaware City and was very happy when they closed. It did not last for long and bought by another company, who are now again polluting our air and water. I hear nothing much is being done to prevent this, NO SURPRISE!!!!

Message: I'd walk out my back door and up Ashton Street to the shop. I always 'wondered' about their small, wedge shaped back yard. This was in the 60s.

Message: I was so sad to read about the murder-robbery at Concord Ave. & West (my old neighborhood). When I first moved there, that store was Eddie Matz', then Eve's Sweet Shoppe, then Ahearn's. We kids played around there all the time. That was where the Filipino yo-yo man came and did his demonstrations. I believe, Connie, you said you bought your papers there. It was really the center of the neighborhood. How times have changed! So sad.

Message: NORMAN - Don't remember any of those. But then we went to shops in the other direction. We mostly went to Pop Horner's and the shop at 25th and Market.
