Message: SharonRae--I have very little time before I have to leave on our trip to Mexico but I wanted to let you know that I was able to speak with my father this evening. He had a clear memory of Harley Faulkner (although he didn't remember directly whether he was the man who once helped us with our yard work). My father said that he remembered Harley because he was an "outstandingly ethical" individual in the sometimes less-so world of the post-WWII used car business. He told me that Harley had also been employed as the used car manager for a Lincoln-Mercury dealership (PK Motors (located on Gov. Printz Blvd.) in which my dad was the managing partner). So, although I don't know for sure if Harley was the man who helped my father with some yard work at our home, the connection seems just too close for Mr. and Mrs. Faulkner to have not been the people who ended up with my dog, Skipper. While I'm away, I'll be looking forward to hearing anything else you may learn about the Harley and Ola Faulkner and their Cocker Spaniels. Many, many thanks, SharonRae, you've helped me to resolve a very old childhood wound. Sincerely, Danny Stat

Message: SharonRae--When I read your post here, I had a very strong feeling of relief, as if I had been "touched" by grace. At the time, I was only 7 or 8 year-old so I didn't know where Mr. Faulkner lived or really anything about him other than that he had done some work around our house in Wilmington. Yesterday, I was talking to my father and asked him about the man who had helped him out with some of the work in our yard (I remembered helping the man rake leaves). Suddenly, after what's been more than 60 years, my Dad remembered the name "Faulkner" and the detail about his family having been involved in the used car business. Coincidentally, my father's brother, Harry Stat, also worked for Keils, in their fuel oil department and, at one time, my uncle also sold used cars from his car lot (Stat Motors) located at 36th and Market St.(SW Corner). It seems impossible that there couldn't have been a connection between Harley Faulkner and the Stat Family, probably through my Dad's brother, Harry. I haven't spoken with my father yet, but already I feel some sort of deep resolution knowing the likelihood that Skipper ended up with your husband's aunt, Ola, who must have loved Cocker Spaniels. Given the events of history and our world since then, I know it must seem like such a small thing, but learning the possible fate of my first puppy means more to me than I can put into words.

Message: Connie, I bought my mom Evening on Paris for Christmas every year, it was in pretty blue bottle, but I don't think she ever put it on. I think she was allergic to perfumes and that may have been the reason. We lived on 2nd and Franklin when we first moved to De. and Mr. Lynch who was in his 90's lived next door had a beautiful rose garden and would give my mom red roses. She was so allergic to them and would sneeze her head and had to throw them in the trash. She never had the heart to tell him she could not have roses in the house.

Message: SharonRae--I'm leaving for Mexico tomorrow and won't be back on my computer until the middle of February but I will ask my father (94&1/2 years-old) if he remembers "Harley" as being the man who I'm hoping to learn about. It seems like a huge 'coincidence' that Harley's wife, Ola, had Cocker Spaniels. Can you tell me if either Harley or Ola are still alive? When I was about 7 years old my Cocker Spaniel, "Skipper" was given to a Mr. Faulkner and ever since then I've wanted to find out how my dog fared after I lost sight of him. If "Skipper" was the impetus for Ola's love of and involvement with Cocker Spaniels, it would be a heart-warming resolution to my lingering boyhood question about my first puppy. Thank you for opening the door to that possibility; it's a wonderful gift. Danny Stat

Members of Mr. Falkner's extended family may have been in the used car business in Wilmington. Any help with this will be sincerely appreciated.

P.S. I'm heading to Mexico on Monday so will be off line until my return in mid-February.

Message: My previous post, #566, just goes to show you how much I know about women's perfumes. Just found out that Lanvin makes different fragrances. I thought Lanvin was just one fragrance.

A men's cologne which was popular in the late 60's was Hawiian Surf, and unfotunately, is no longer made. The company went out of business. My Dad always used Old Spice, but once in a while used some of my Canoe. Present favorite is Acqua di Gio. I still use BRUT thiough, because if it was good enough for Joe Namath, it's still good enough for me.

Message: Terri: My grandfather, Jacob Statnekoo (the final letter of his surname was changed to an "o" from a "v" at the immigration office in Philadelphia) arrived in the U.S. in November of 1906 and immediately moved to Wilmington where he was employed (I'm not sure the years of his employment) by the Pullman Company, at their Wilmington shops where passenger railway cars were refurbished. Jacob Statnekoo was a master carpenter; because he did such fine work, he was known as the man with "golden or "magic" hands." I'm sorry to say that I don't have any photos of the Pullman shops; in fact, I don't even know where they were located, but I imagine that they were contiguous to the RR tracks. If, in your research, you discover more information about the Pullman shops in Wilmington, I would very much appreciate and enjoy learning more about my grandfather's place of employment in those first decades of the 20th century. Good luck and best wishes, Daniel Statnekov

Message: As a small kid in the 50's, I remember coming back to Wilmington, on a family ride, from New Castle along New Castle Ave., and in the general area of 'A' and S. Heald Sts., noticed that homes still had their Christmas decorations and lights on, in the 2nd week of January. My parents explained that that it was due to the Russian/Ukrainian population in the area. A little recent research showed that the Russian/Ukrainians celebrate their Christmas on either Jan. 6th or 7th, and the festivities last until Jan. 19th.

A little further down New Castle Ave., going towards New Castle, is Eden Park, once called Moncton Park. The property was purchased by Robert Morris, in 1783. He was a signer of the 'Declaration of Independence'. At one time,(50's or so), the Polish people in the area used to call Eden Park, 'Baranek Park'. Baranek translates to sheep or lamb. 'Baranek Park' was probably given it's name from the 2 sheep or lamb, stone statues/figurines which used to adorn the entrance to the Park, one on each side of the entrance driveway. Interesting history of that area of Wilmington.

I ordered a bottle of Arpege and it certainly wasn't what I remembered smelling! Way too much sandlewood in the new version. Just bought a bottle of My Sin off ebay - I'll see what it smells like. I was really disappointed that the Arpege wasn't the same.

Message: January 20th is an important date for a many Wilmingtonians. Here's one historical event that might be celebrated by all former Wilmington basketball players, including, Leo Marshall, Harry Stat and Ed Dunning: On January 20th 1892, the VERY FIRST basketball game was played; unfortunately for us, this took place in Massachusetts. If that had happened in Delaware, we would be known as the "First State TWICE"! For Cesar Rodney's ride and for the now-national fetish of "hoops and balls," can you imagine what a combination that would have been?

In other news, January 20th, 1930 was the date for the first radio broadcast of "The Lone Ranger," and for many of us reading this column, today marks yet another important date in our own musical history, on this very day, in 1965, The Byrds recorded "Mr Tambourine Man." Make it another good day!

That's what I'm trying to find out - if that was a homeopathic hospital. This was in the late 20s. Here's hoping! :)

Message: Jerry-Sometime, in the last couple of years, I took my mom to the Charcoal Pit; they still served the balance of your milkshake to you in the metal container in which they mixed the shake. I always order a chocolate milkshake with vanilla ice cream, light on the chocolate syrup and ask for extra malt which technically makes the drink a "malted" milk shake. When you get back to Wilmington give it a try; I think you'll be surprised at how good those shakes still taste.

Favorite candy at the movies was a box of jujubes; this was a VERY gummy sort of candy, a handful of which would sometimes cause your teeth to stick together, after which it took quite an effort to pry them apart again. If I was a dentist, I'd keep a big bowl of 'em in my waiting room for all the kids who came in for dental work! Probably would not be too popular with their moms, but I'm sure that in another 50 years many of those kids would remember me on their own OldWilmington.net. Yeah, a big bowl of jujubes in the waiting room at the dentist would truly be memorable..... :D :D :D

Message: Fred Best : I graduated from Archmere in 1966. A bunch of us used to 'hang out' at 'The Park' , called West End Park then, and bordered by S. Franklin, S. Broom and Maple St. We weren't a gang, but some ,like the black gang, the Mau- Mau's, thought we were. That's another story. Anyway,my cousin Walt Tomczyk and I went to Archmere, some went to Brown Vo-Tech, some to W.H.S., and some to Sallies. A couple who went to Sallies and graduated in 1966, who you might have known, were Jim Pietlock and Zenny Ragan. A couple, 1 yr. younger, were Bernie Pietlock and Joe Carroll who graduated in 1967. I didn't know anyone from 'The Yard', but heard of them. Saw a group of them once, hanging out on the boardwalk in Rehoboth, back in the 60's. They did give the impression of the Fonzarelli's of the time period. A close e-mail buddy, Gary Savage, said he knew Patrick Igo well, from the Yard., even though he didn't live in the area, only frequented it. 1966 was a good year. Fond memories of the 60's.

We had to lay down in the back seat for our safety because of the gun shots and the burning buildings a few blocks up, it was very scary. Message: Once, in the early 1960's, I awoke at the Ellis Drive-In to discover that my girl friend and I had fallen asleep with the heater of my car running and......my car's battery was dead! It was 2 o'clock in the morning and the theater was deserted. This was well-before the era of the cell phone but the Ellis did have a pay phone at the little refreshment stand and/or projection center in the midst of the circular rows of parking spaces, each with it's own speaker stanchion. I called the pay phone at the Hollywood Diner located at Concord Ave. and Market Streets and through a stroke of good fortune found that a Wilmington police officer who I knew had gotten off of work and was having a cup of coffee before going home for the night. Long story short, Franny Schneider drove out to the Ellis (in his late '50's Chrysler Imperial) with some jumper cables and rescued us in time for me to get my girl friend home before the sun rose again over Wilmington the next morning.

And, yes, the words to the Everly Brothers' 1957 song, "Wake up Little Susie" DID pass through my mind, both at the time and again today.......

This was somewhere down on south Walnut Street (east side of the roadway) or South Market Street where it makes the curve and becomes the DuPont Pkwy (I may be mistaken about the precise location.). From the road you could see the high banked track with a row of old tires lined up (against a fence?) at the upper edge of the track. My sweetheart and I are thinking of taking a couple of weeks in February and coming down to Mexico. Deborah was just down there in that same locale with her sons over the holidays and tells me that it's idyllic, a peaceful place with beautiful beaches far from the turf wars of the drug gangs that have plagued other areas in Mexico.

Message: Phil Culver-Thanks for the memories along with some of the Gasser details. I remember Matsun Run store, too. There was a guy who worked there also named Phil although his last name was "Snyder," I believe, who drove a black, '58 Chevy Impala. Two owners of that store: one was named "Stan" and the other's name has faded from my memory; the portly owner was always uptight, I hope he's the one whose name I've forgotten. You probably worked at Gassers after the Frankel boys and Mort Rosenblatt had already left the neighborhood.

Message: Hi Budo. The forties, huh? A bit before my time. Frank was the pharmacist's name. The nicotine brother wasn't all there. My mom was a 1950 PS grad but she passed about 2 years ago. The mock holdup happened right around the time 67-68 that a Sallies kid got shot in the back from someone in a passing car. A bit scary. The youngest Gasser was the gay one, at least he acted gay. I joined the AF in 72 and didn't come back until 91 on a little trip.

Message: Hey Phil, Interesting stories about Gasser's store I never heard about. The time period I remember was in the 40's but it probably didn't change much over the years.

Message: Danny Stat and Budo, I used to work with Mr. Gasser the pharmacist. Worked the fountain, stocked shelves, painted the upstairs apartment, fended off one of the younger Gasser's interest, helped out in the little grocery store run by the other Gasser. Then there was the one Gasser who would always sit on a fountain stool, smoking cigarettes. I will always remember the nicotine stain on his finger tips. Would deliver prescriptions around the neighborhood or drive with the Mr. Pharmacist Gasser for deliveries farther away. The place was a bit of a hang-out but the real hangout in the late 60's was Matson Run which is where I worked next. I remember one evening I was there alone and one of the neighborhood hood's came by, said this was a holdup, flashed a revolver, and then said "just kidding". I'm still working on the brown stain.
